WELLINGTON RETAIN BRABIN SHIELD

The annual contest for the Brabin Shield between junior representative elevens from Wellington and Canterbury was concluded at the Basin Reserve yesterday, and, after a most exciting finish, ended in a victory for the home team by one run. The game was resumed at 10 o’clock yesterday morning, when the not out men, Robinson and Hepburn, continued Wellington’s first innings, with three wickets down for 15 runs. The weather was fine but cloudy, and the wicket was easy after the heavy rain on Tuesday. The sun dispersed the clouds as the day wore on, and wicket and outfield greatly improved in the afternoon. Thanks to a sound innings for 55 by the Wellington College colt, V. Du Chateau, and useful knocks by W. Hepburn (26), D. Morgan (32), and B. Hankins (20). Wellington totalled 172. Escott. a Boys’ High School left-hander, and R. J. S. Bean, of Christ's College, were the most successful bowlers for the visitors, and both kept a good length. With four wickets down for 105 it appeared as if Canterbury were in for an easy victory, but Bilby and Fortune bowled so well that wickets commenced to fall and the game took a problematical turn. When the last man came in ten runs were required to win, and there was great excitement as the score mounted. With the total at 170, however, and with one run required to tie and two to win, Champness was adjudged l.b.w. to Bilby, and Wellington thus retained the Brabin Shield by the narrowest of possible margins. G. H. Stringer, a Boys’ High School left-hander, played a capital ’5l. and Bean (Christ’s College). King (Riccarton), and Graham (Old Collegians) also made valiant efforts with the bat to bring victory _ to their side. C. Bilby. the Institute representative, bowled particularly well for Wellington, capturing six wickets for 37 runs off 23.1 overs. Fortune (Institute),.and D. Morgan (Midland), also kept a good length.
