The oldest lens known was discovered in the ruins of Nineveh. Its magnifying power must have been noticed, but it was probably used not as a microscrope,. but as a burning-glass. The lens as an aid to vision dates only from the Middle Ages. Eggs, said to be almost indistinguishable from English fresh eggs, are now being imported into Britain from Australia and South Africa. During the voyage they are not frozen, but kept cool by currents of air passing through the holds where they are stored.
