GOVERNOR SMITH

TOUCHING FAREWELL SCENES (Australian Press Association.) Albany (New York), January 1. Mr. Franklin Rosevelt to-day was inaugurated Governor of New York State and Governor Smith became a private citizen after having served four terms as Governor and spent twenty-five years in public life. Both the incoming and outgoing Governors reviewed the military parade from a .stand in front of the Executive Mansion, aftef which they motored to the ; Capitol for formal ceremonies. Crotvds lined the streets at every point, cheering both Roosevelt and Smith, but particularly the latter, who was visibly, affected by the demonstration. Touching scenes also occurred when the retiring Governor bade farewell to the staff, many stenographers and others being in tears. Mr. Smith left for New York following the ceremonies.
