ADVENTUROUS LIFE ENDS

DEATH OF MR. H. J. A. BARBER Palmerston North, January 2. Henry James Alfred Barber, aged 81, of Tiritea, died on Monday. The son of Alfred Barber, of Buenos Aires, he was a pioneer British merchant in the Argentine and part owner with Don Justo Carril in San Guilleomo Estancia. Although born in Liverpool, England, for forty years Barber led an adventurous life in the Argentine. On the southern frontier he took part in numerous campaigns against the Indians, and acted as scout in times of raids. For services in this way it was the custom to grant settlers tracts of land. He witnessed many- atrocious acts by Indians and his efforts wei s largely instrumental towards a treaty being effected between them and the Government. The country in which he settled was almost unknown and unmapped, but Mr. Barber su '-eeded in clearing and stocking his property, which was known as the Estancia La Lena. While in Argentina the late Mr. Barber married a daughter of the late Mr. W. A. Pritt, of Wallasey. Cheshire, and his family was born there. In 1900 the family came to New Zealand and settled at Tiritea, where, the late Mr. Barber resided until his death. He leaves a widow and five sons and two (laughters —Messrs. J. P. and C. H. Barber (Kaitieke), H. A. Barber (Queensland), W. F. Barber (Eltham), E. S. Barber (Palmerston North), and Misses E. and K. Barber (Palmerston North). One son, Mr. W. J. Barber, was killed at the Battle of the Somme.
