FATAL LEVEL CROSSING SMASH THREE WOMEN KILLED TRAGIC END TO HOLIDAY By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, January 2. A car containing five people, who were returning from their holidays, was 100 yards off home at Horotiu when it was struck by the RotoruaAuckland express. One of the passengers was killed instantly, and two died from injuries. The other two were seriously injured. The members of the party were:— Miss Violet Howse, of Auckland, killed instantly. Mrs. Alice Armstrong, died on the way to the hospital. Mrs. Lindsay Anderson, of Auckland, died this morning in hospital. Miss Milly Armstrong, seriously injured. Mr. Alexander Armstrong, seriously injured. . OCCUPANTS’ LUCKY ESCAPE Dominion Special Service. Nelson, January 2. The seven occupants of a Blenheim car, which came to grief in the Rai Valley on New Year’s Eve, had a miraculous escape from death or serious injury. The car, which was driven by Mr. IL J. S. Mitchell, of Blenheim, apparently ran off the road at a culvert in the long straight stretch on the Havelock side of the Rai Valley settlement. The car somersaulted and landed upside down. It was completely wrecked, but none of the occupants was seriously hurt. MOTOR-CARS IN COLLISION By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, January 2. A collision between two cars at 2 o’clock on New Year’s morning at a street intersection resulted in both cars being considerably damaged. The four occupants of one car were injured, Pearl Olsen receiving concussion, Albert Williams a broken collarbone, and the others severe shock. Both drivers were uninjured. LITTLE BOY KILLED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 2. A motor-car accident at Otaua, near Waiuku, resulted in the death of the infant son of Mrs. Wilson, who was on a visit to Mrs. 8. Bright, of Otaua. The car was being driven on the main road towards Otaua, when one of the tires blew out. The car skidded and capsized. The other passengers escaped with’shock and bruises. CAR CAPSIZES OVER BANK By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, January 2. A motor-car travelling to Dunedin skidded on loose metal at Fairfield today and capsized twice over a bank. The driver, Frederick Irvine, of Kensington, was badly cut about the head and the other occupants, Ivan Chapman, and his four-year-old son, of Dunedin, and Alfred Fowler, of Invercargill, were also hurt. Mr. Chapman is suffering from a broken arm and Mr. Fowler and his boy had their faces badly cut. The car was considerably damaged. FATAL FALL FROM MOTORCYCLE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, January 2. While riding a motor-cycle from Palmerston to Dunedin this afternoon Henry Percival Whyborn, farm labourer, aged 21 years, was thrown heavily from his machine. He was picked up unconscious and brought to the Dunedin Hospital, where he was found suffering from severe bead injuries. Despite treatment, however, he died at 7.15 this evening. His parents reside at Salisbury Street, Kaikorai. MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN KILLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. New Plymouth, January 2. ■ Annabelle Hughes, aged 52, wife of William Hughes, a storeman, was killed In a motor smash to-night. The car was full of passengers, and apparently Mrs. Hughes was sitting on. the knee of another in the back seat. The car left the road, and plunged into a ditch, and the jolt threw Mrs. Hughes out on her head. She was dead when a doctor arrived. None of tlie other passengers was injured. INJURIES PROVE FATAL. Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 2. Leslie Anderson, aged 18, whose parents live at Foxton, died in Palmerston North Hospital to-day, following injuries received in a motor accident near Sanson on Tuesday evening. The injured youth was one of a party of five in a car driven by J. B. Coley, of Foxtou, returning from Marton races. When struck from behind by another car it capsized into a swamp. The car was badly damaged, but no one else in the party was seriously hurt. An inquest will be held. A new London highway through the heart of Dockland, is to cost three million pounds. _____
