NEW YEAR’S DAY AT NELSON

HEAVY FALLS OF RAIN AND HAIL. / - ■ ... Dominion Special Service. • Nelson, January 2. . The weather for the holiday yesterday was of a mixed description in the city. Rain fell during the early morning and was followed by a spell of hot sunshine. A brief thunderstorm passed over at 2.30 o’clock in the afternoon, and in. some places a few hailstones as big as pigeons’ eggs fell. Had the hail been general it would have broken every, glasshouse in the city, and done extensive damage to crops in Havelock and the Pelorus Sound. There were several exceptionally heavy falls of rain and hail.
