BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

WELLINGTON CENTRE’S TOURNEY

THE AUSTRALIAN INVASION

INTEREST IN COMING TEST GAMES <>

With the arrival of a large party of Australian bowlers by the Marama from Sydney yesterday, the Australian contingent for the Dominion Bowling Association’s tourney next week is complete. Interest in the test matches between the two countries which commence to-day is very keen and close games are expected. The Wellington Centre’s tourney was concluded yesterday, when the Hataitai rink carried off 1 the honours.

The Wellington Centre’s tournament was brought to a conclusion yesterday afternoon at the Wellington Club’s green in the presence of a large assemblage of bowlers, animation being lent the scene by the- presence of most of the Australian bowlers who are in Wellington to take part in the Tost matches (v. New Zealand) and the big Dominion association’s touurnament which is to fqllow next week. . Semi-finals. The results of the semi-final games were as follow :— Hataitai—Bennett. Wellings, Cometti. Brighting (s.), 25; Kelburn—Forgie. Williams, Lomas, Stephens (s.), 15. Wellington—Fotheringham, Smith, Dimock, Fairway (s.), IS; Thorndon — Hyams, Torrance, Thomson, Naylor (s.), 14. Although the green was on the heavy side the rinks had been carefully prepared, and a very good exhibition of bowls was given in both games. In the Hataitai-Kelburn game the former rink drew ahead from the start, Cometti and Brighting playing with great steadiness and accuracy. Williams, ns usual, played a very reliable game for Stephens, who also played well tin to form. In the other game generalship and steadiness on the part of Smith and Dimock gave Fairway solid support, and Naylor and Thomson played well for Thorndon. The Wellington rink was eight up when the last head had to be nlaved. and up till Navlor’s last bowl Wellington Iny the shot, but Naylor’s firm shot rattled into the bead nnd gave Thorndon four shots, leaving, Wellington the victors by four points. The Final. Hataitai —Bennett, Wellings, Cometti, Brighting (s.), 20; Wellington—Fotheringham, Smith, Dimock, Fairway (s.j, 13. This game saw a very sound exhibition o£ bowls in brilliant sunshine, with a green that played amazingly _ well considering the amount of absorption it had been subjected to this week. On the whole the winners have to be congratulated on their victory, as on the day they played better bowls, were just that trifle more dependable, and showed an excellent team spirit under very capable direction. They scored on eight out of the first eight heads; indeed, they only permitted their opponents to score on seven out of the twenty-one heads. Bennett, the lead, played brilliantly easily outclassing his man. Cometti was always reliable, and Brighting played with rare skill and judgment throughout the game. One notably good shot was played by Brighting when Wellington lay five shots, and he drew a good second through n lot of front wood. That shot prevented what would have been a much closer finish than it was. Fairway’s rink played better bowls all-round in the semi-final game, but they had the luck against them on two or three heads, notably when Dimock, with two successive bowls, just missed scoring shots by fractional margins. Smith drove well when called upon to do so, but Fairway was scarcely so confident or accurate as Brighting. At the conclusion of the game, the president of the centre (Mr. M. Marks), heartily congratulated the winners ami run-ners-up on the' excellent exposition of bowls given, one which had doubtless caused the Australian bowlers present to “shiver in their shoes.” It wns remarkable that the rinks which contested the final, were the same practically as last season, and once more Brighting had won the game. Mr. Marks said he also especially wished to congratulate Cometti, who had already won the centre’s gold medal, as a winner of five centre championships, and had now added a sixth. The president concluded his remarks by calling for cheers for the winners, and the runnersup. AUSTRALIAN BOWLERS ARRIVE YESTERDAY INTEREST IN TEST.
