TROTTING

NEW YEAR’S DAY EVENTS FIELDS REVIEWED (By “Overcheck.”) Tlie Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will be commenced at Addington to-morrow, when an interesting day's racing is assured notwithstanding the absence of most of the highest class horses in Auckland. The first race on the* programme is the INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; for unhoppled trotters; 3.40 class. One mile and a-half. Oval ser Molly Molloy .. 24 Lonesome 12 Sea Queen .... 60 Pieter Timmer- Great Amazon.. 72 man 24 Lady Fan .... 72 Repute 24 Young Carbine 72 Reviewing the handicaps purely from a time point of view the horses that appear to be most favourably treated are Oval, Lady Fan and Young Carbine. The former registered 3.36 2-5, when she ran second to Molly Molloy at New Brighton in March last, the going being described as slow. Site was then conceding Molly Molloy 72 yds., whereas the latter is now asked to give away 24. Lady Fan has 3.30 against her,- she having registered that tina; in this race last year, when she ran third to Sarsaparilla and Sea Queen, conceding 108yds. to the former and 60 to the latter. Now Sea Queen receives only 12 yards. Young Carbine ran second to Nelson Boy at Addington in November, registering 2-5 from a 3.33 mark, so he is well treated in being placed on a 3.34 mark. Of the others I am inclined to favour the chances of Lonesome most. She registered 3.37 4-5 at Wellington in November and if she can be induced to go evenly she should be able to knock a second or two off that time. With a clear field in front of her Oval has everything in her favour, and she may be the actual favourite from Lady Fan and Young Carbine. Then comes the TEMPLETON HANDICAP, of 225 sovs.; 3.33 class. One mile and a-balf. Hard Knocks scr Springtime .... 12 Audrey Dillon scr Loco 12 Lord Bountiful scr Young Bingen 12 Vikota scr Sonoma Child 12 Apex scr Pet Locanda .. 12 Audience scr Sylvie Logan.. 24 Nan Brent .... 12 Becky Mine ... 24 Horotane 12 Erin’s Royal .. 48

There are several very promising young horses engaged in this race, which bears a very open appearance. None of those on the front make any sort of an appeal to me, but when you come to the 3.32 mark you find Nan Brent, Horotane,'Loeo, Sonoma Child, and Pet Locanda, and I am inclined to think the winner will be one of these. Nan Brent ran 3.31 at Oamaru last May, while at the Ashburton meeting on Boxing Day she ran third to Kiowa and Dick Logan in the McLean Handicap, going 3.33 1-5 on a track that was inclined to be slow. In that race Sylvia Logan, Loco and Becky Mine were unplaced. Horotane showed good form last year, but may not be ready yet. Sonoma Child, as no doubt you all know, won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton in June, time 3.38 1-5, tke going being "dead.” At New Brighton on the 15th Instant, Sonoma Child ran second to Dilnon in the Innovation Handicap, going 3.29 2-5, so that it is not unlikely that he will be able to record even better timeat Addington on New Year’s Day. Pet Locanda registered 2.15 3-5 when she ran second to Albena at Ashburton on December 8, which works out at approximately 3.24 for a mile and a half. She should therefore be able to equal, if not better, her handicap time of 3.32. Of the others, Becky Mine may have the largest following. The order of favouritism may be Sonoma Child, Pet Locanda and Nan Brent. Now comes the principal race of the day, the CANTERBURY HANDICAP, of 1100 sovs.; 4.29 class. Two miles. Talent scr Logan Chief .. 24 Quality 12 Author Jinks .. 24 Western King 12 Vesuvius ...... 24 Logan Park .. 12 Waitaki Girl .. 60 Kingcraft .... 24 Ahuriri 72 Talent is handicapped within a fraction of a second of his best time. He is not a' true stayer, and I doubt whether he will be capable of winning this race. He will make a good pacemaker, and if the speed is on from the start, it will suit the backmarker, Ahuriri, who is a great stayer and particularly well-handi-capped in being placed on a 4.23 mark. Quality is unreliable, while Western King has yet to win over the distance. .. He is a good one, and should stay if specially trained for a journey. In Logan Park, however, he will find a dangerous antagonist for this horse has speed and can stay. On his recent public form Logan Park appears to be in better order than ever before, and it will not be surprising <to find him in strong demand with the general public. Kingcraft is a good young horse who has yet to finish further back than second. At Addington in November he won the Courtenay Handicap from Author Jinks by half a length, the latter conceding 12yds. Quality, also conceding 12yds., was fourth. Now Quality meets Kingcraft on 24 and Author Jinks on 12 yards better terms. Logan Chief will be hard to beat if the going is soft, but if tlie going is fast, I question whether he will be in a place. Vesuvius is an improved horse, and registered 4.26 2-5 at Addington on tlie day tliat Kingcraft ran 4.29, while at Forbury be finished ahead of Author Jinks in the President’s Handicap, in which they both started from a 4.28 mark. On paper, therefore,’ Vesuvius read best of the 4.27 section. At a difference of only 12yds. few will want to support Waitaki Girl to defeat Ahuriri. Summed up, it would appear that Logan Park, Ahuriri and Vesuvius should be in the picture when whips are out. Next comes the

LYTTELTON HANDICAP (saddle), of 225 sovs.; 3.34 class. One mile aud a-haif Fair Dillon ... scr Mercury .. 1” Direct Chimes scr Star Lady 12 Roidena scr Avon wood .... 24 Great Abdallah scr Donard 24 Florrie Pointer scr Alvira 36 Nipper 12 White Sun .... 48

The field is not a particularly strong one. Fair Dillon ran 2.21 at Ashburton in May, but this was in a harness event, whereas the race now under review is in saddle. Direct Chimes ran second in a mile and a half saddle race at New Brighton in Marell, when he registered 3.32 4-5, iu slow going, and so is not badly treated in being handicapped on 3.34. Roidena won one race last year, but there was not a great deal of merit in his performance. Neither Great Abdallah, Florrie Pointer, nor Nipper has done anything of note though Great Abdallah rail third at Greymouth fairly recently. Mercury has raced so badly since going down to Christchurch that one can hardly recommend her until she shows an improvement in form. Star Lady is in good shape, while Avonwood ran second to Becky Mine in the Summer Handicap, of . one mile and a quarter, at the last New Brighton meeting. Now we come to Donard and Alvira, both tried saddle horses, and it will not be surprising to find them, at the head of the betting, and of the field when the judge's box is reached. White Sun is returning to form, and should race well, but possibly Direct Chimes will prove most troublesome to Donard and Alvira.

STEWARD:'.’ HANDICAP, of 3(io sovs.; for unhopplid trotters; 4.44 class. Two miles. Marvin Junr. scr Len Wood .... 30 Nelson Ata .. scr Our Lady 36 Katute 24 Sarsaparilla ... 48

Nlghborn 24 Kerwood Bell .. 48 Bonny Belmont 24 Duke Bingen .. 72 Wild Hebe .... 24 Audoiniuion ... 84 Nourraahal .... 36

Marvin Junior should be held safe by Nelson Ata.l who registered 4.49 af Oamaru in October, and appears to be racing in improved form. Katute registered 3.27 4-5 at Adding-ton in November, which at a oue-mile rate of speed of 2.18 works out at 4.36 for two miles. If she could be depended upon to race evenly Katute would be hard to beat, but her unreliability cannot lie disregarded. Nigl.born is nicely in on 4.42, which is a couple of seconds slower than his best time of last year, but it is hardly likely that he is right back to that form. Wild Hebe won the Seaview Handicap at New Brighton on December 15 in 4.45 4-5. Sarsaparilla, conceding 24 yards, and Nelson Ata, in receipt of 12 yards, being unplaced. Two days later Sarsaparilla won the New Brighton Handicap, Wild Hebe, who started from the same mark, being fourih. Nourniahal lias won at two miles, but is not regarded as a true stayer, and in being placed on 4.41 she is set to do a good deni better time than she has recorded over the distance. Len Wood ran 4.41 2-5 at Ashburton in April last, and if produced in his best form should give a good account of himself. Our Lady ran second to Duke Bingen in this race last year, their times being 4.39 3-5 and 4.46 2-5 respectively. The former also ran 4.41 when finishing third to Petroleuse and’ Kerrwood Bell at Addington in June. She was then conceding Kerwood Bell 36 yards, and Sarsaparilla 60 yards; now site receives 12 yards from them both. Of tlie last four Duke Bingen is preferred. He went 4.36 at Addington in November, and is now on 4.38. Possibly Duke Bingen, Onr Lady, and r-o’. 1 will find most favour.

ISLINGTON HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.; 2.48 class. One mile and a-quarter. Genuine scr Zenith 24 Lady Match- General Bingen 24 light scr Away 24 William the Fight Ever .... 24 Great scr Black Admiral 36 Dundas Boy .. scr Golden Devon .. 36 Pluto 12 Countryman .. 36 Firelight 12 Acron 48 Acre 12 Bonny Logan .. 60 Golden Bubbles 24 This race also bears a very open appearance. On past performances Genuine can hardly be selected to defeat Lady Matchlight or William the Great. At Addington in November Lady Matchllglit ran second to Golden Bubbles, .registering 2.46 4-5 as against the latter's 2.46 3-5. Golden Bubbles then wont on to Otahuhu. where she registered 2.44 1-5 on two occasions, and it is no doubt to this fact tliat she is now asked to concede Lady Matchlight 24 yards. William tlie Great ran third to Pageant and Jolly Chimes in the Hornby Handicap, going 2.45 2-5, and being only about a neck away. Dundas Boy is racing well, but may find the present company a little too strong for him. Pluto and Firelight would, I think, be suited b.v a longer journey. Acre has run all his best races at Addington, but will have to show still further improvement if he is to be the winner of this race. Of the 24 yards division Golden Bubbles is preferred. Of tlie others Bonny Logan may do best, but in being asked to go 2.43 she is set a stiff task, particularly when it is remembered that some of those on the front have been let up about a couple of seconds. Personally I look to the finish being fought out b.v Lady Matchllglit, William the Great, and Golden Bubbles. RAILWAY HANDICAP (saddle), of 250 sovs.; 2.17 class. One mile. Chef scr Oltoura 12 Shadowland .. scr Bing Boy .... 12 Dick Logan .. scr Sahib 12 Succession ... scr Bingen Lad ... 24 Sunfish scr Granite City .. 24 Milo Minto .... 12 Dr.rknite 30 With only 36 yards separating the front division and the back-marker, an excellent race should result. In the past Shadowland has done practically all his racing over longer journeys and the present race will be rather a uew experience for him. As however he has done 4.38 2-5, he should be equal to a mile in 2.17. Dick Logan won comfortably at New Brighton in 2.18 2- while at Ashburton he ran a mile and a half in 3.29 4-5. In August Succession ran third to Sahib and Brutus, going 2.15 1-5 and if he runs up to that form he should be in the money. Milo Minto won at Methven in 2.17 4-5 and at New Brighton in 2.17 1-5. Ohoura is handicapped almost up to her best time and the same applies to Bing Boy. In being placed on 2.1 G Sahib has been let in a little light as on three occasions be has gone 2.14 1-5, the last time being at Addington in August. Of Bingen Lad, Granite City and Darknite I prefer Granite City, who registered 2.14 3- at New Brighton this month. A likely trio appear to be Sbadowlamd, Sahib anil Succession. The day’s racing will conclude with the AU REVOIR HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.; 2.1 G class. One mile. Lord Bingen scr light 12 Searchlight Orphan 12 Lad scr Avenger 12 Fashion Queen 12 Mate o’ Mine .. 24 Harold Burwood 12 Omaha ........ 24 Arran Chief.... 12 Golden Devon. 48 Dillon Gold ... 12 Logan Holme .. 48 Lady Match- Logan Chief .. 84

Lord Bingen has not in public done better than 2.17 aud so can hardly be regarded as possibility on 2.16. Searchlight Lad appears to be too close to Arran Chief and Dillon Gold, to say nothing of Fashion Queen, who would be a probability if she could be relied upon to go away correctly. Hatold Burwood won this race last year in 2.13, but has done nothing since. Arran Chief was second at New Brighton, recording 2.16 2-5, and he should be able to better this at Addington. Last June Dillon Gold and Arran Chief were first and second respectively in the Telegraph Handicap when they met on the same terms as they do in this race. Orphan, Avenger, and Omaha appear to be held safe by Mate-o-Mine, who has. been racing very consistently this season, but he will not need to dwell journey if he is to hold off Golden Devon and Logan Holme, the former having 2.10 3-5 against him and the; latter 2.11 4-5. Logan Chief may be equal to _.9, but if the going is good, some of those in front will most likely improve upon their tims, in which case Logan Chief will have to record particularly -fast time to win. The public may repose most confidence in Arran Chief, Dillon Gold and Mate-o-Minc.
