BOWLS

WELLINGTON CENTRE TOURNAMENT NO PLAY ON SATURDAY Owing to the heavy and continuous rain during Friday night, which gave all local bowimg greens a thorough soaking, it was decided to cancel the rest of the section play in the centre’s tournament that was to have taken place on Saturday (three more rounds). Though the sky was overcast on Saturday morniug, there was practically no rain, and the afternoon was bright and warm. For those reasons there was comment in some quarters at the action of the executive of the centre in closing down on section play. It was thought that at least another two rounds could have been played between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. On its part, the centre had to consider the sodden state of the greens at 9 a.m., and the necessity of preserving them as far as possible for the big tournament of next week.

For the purposes of post-section play —to be commenced on the Karori green at 9 a.m. to-day—all those with three or more losses have been eliminated. The rest have all been included in the postsection rounds, which will be decided on the “sudden death" principle. Following are the skips of rinks who are concerned in to-day’s play :—

Lowry (Kelburn) with 6 wins. Fairway (Wellington) with 5 wins. Brighting (Hataitai) with 5 wins. Conder (Island BajJ with 5 wins. Hale (Island Bay) with 4 wins. Gardner (Kelburn) with 4 wins. HUTT VALLEY TOURNAMENT The Hutt Valley bowling tournament will commence this morning, weather permitting. - DOMINION TOURNAMENT THE RINKS FINE BOWLING TALENT The Rink Championship is really the blue riband event of the Dominion, Bowling Association’s tournament. Wellington bowlers have never been wildly enthusiastic about singles or pairs, and on more than one occasion the writer lias seen important games decided with only a very few spectators present; but with Wellington bowlers “the rinks game is the tiing.” With only two bowls to put up, a man has to take every care to get to the spot indicated by his skip, but with four bowls (as in singles and pairs) a bowler is always prone to believe that he need not bother so very much, as the next bowl “is bound to do the trick.” The rink tournament is be played on Wednesday. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. January 9, 10, 11 and. 12 (two games of 25 heads per day). The sectionary placing of the rinks is as follows: — SECTION A. ' Greens. — Wednesday.
