CHASE

Auckland, December 30.

Discovered when ransacking a house in Argyle Street, Herne Bay, early last night, a burglar received severe treatment from one of the occupants, Mr. D. L. Goldwater. A struggle, in which the honours rested with Mr. Goldwater, a dash by the intruder for liberty, ’ and a chase in a neighbouring street were exciting incidents which followed. Misses Goldwater left by motor-car early in the evening. Shortly after their departure Mr. Goldwater, who had been out playing bowls, returned home to the apparently unoccupied house, and heard a noise in an upstairs room, where he found a man endeavouring to open a drawer. He grappled with him, and a struggle ensiled. Eluding Mr. Goldwater’s grasp, the man dashed out of the house, and made good bis escape. No valuables .were taken.
