FIRE IN BEAM STATION

NEAR BALLARAT Melbourne, December 28. About 3 o'clock to-day a fire occurred at the beam wireless station and threatened to destroy the whole establishment, together with £30.000 worth of equipment. The beam station is situated south-west of Ballarat, eight miles from Ballan. The fire had been burning for an hour and a half when the brigade arrived from Ballarat, 28 miles distant. The greater portion of the main machinery building was gutted and the dynamos seriously damaged. Only the walls of the power-house are left standing. The fire started in the roof, and debris fell, endangering the valuable plant. Officials removed the expensive valves, but were powerless to fight the fire itself. Amalgamated Wireless officials state that the receiving plant is impaired, but the transmission mechanism is not damaged. The service, they added, would recommence at 6.15 p.m. Melbourne time.
