PETONE CARNIVAL

SATURDAY’S SPORTS. Outboard motor-boat racing was a feature of the Petone beach carnival on Saturday afternoon. Nearer to the shore, sinewy young men bent to their oars, and made their craft speed over the water. A great crowd assembled along the sunlit beach, watching with interest the sportsmen in the boats or themselves at some of the numerous sideshows. The diverse nature of the side-shows ensured that there should be something to suit everybody’s taste. To-day the carnival will be continued, when all the sideshows will again be open for business, and Staig’s enterprises, which have been brought down from Hamilton, will provide thrills with their merry-go-round, ocean wave, and electric chairoplane. Beach sports will be a special feature of to-morrow’s programme, and Wednesday will be the closing day. Those who have not attended should not lose the final opportunities, and those who have, shoijjd go again, and be merry while they have the chance. Results. Three outboard races were held, two scratch races, and one handicap event. Both the scratch events were won by Mr. Ranish’s Mischief, with Mr. Wilms-_ hurst’s Gee Whizz second, and the latter’s boat was successful in the handicap event.
