SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS

Carterton, December 29.

The death took place at the South Wairarapa Hospital on Friday of Martha Knowlton, one of the pioneer settlers of the Wairarapa. The deceased lady had attained the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her husband some years ago. The interment took place at the Greytown Cemetery. Mr. N. C.,Baildon, late of Auckland, has taken up his position as manager of the Carterton Municipal Gasworks. The Mount Holdsworth Club has been notified by the Wairarapa South County Council that steps are being taken to secure the restoration of the Public Works grant of £25 for the improvement of the road leading to the mountain. As this will take some time, and with a view to overcoming the delay, the club has now offered to guarantee half the amount of the grant. It is considered that a small gang with machinery could do all that is urgently necessary in a couple of days. A notice has been erected by the club at the entrance of the reserve inviting all motorists who visit Mount Holdsworth to contribute one shilling a car towards the cost of road improvements.
