BRITISH DIPLOMATIC TRIUMPH

ANGLO-CHINESE TREATY

GREAT TRADE POSSIBILITIES OPENED UP

(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.)

London, December 27.

The Anglo-Chinese Treaty, signed at Nanking on December 20, and now released by the Foreign Office, reveals the abrogation of all existing treaties limiting the right of China to settle her national Customs tariff or impose tonnage dues in accordance with her own desires. The annex provides for a similar renunciation on behalf of the Dominions, including Australia and New Zealand, of any such rights. China in return grants Britain and the Dominions most favoured nation treatment. A LEAD TO THE WORLD (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Rec. December 28, 10.35 p.m.) London, December 28. The “Daily Mail” regards the AngloChinese treaty, the text of which was published to-day, as a British diplomatic triumph. It restores friendly relations and opens up great trade possibilities. Britain thus gives a lead to the world, being the first foreign power to sign a treaty with the new Chinese Government.
