WAR’S AFTERMATH

FRANCE’S PENSIONERS

(Australian Press Association.)

Paris, December 27.

It is stated that 2,500,000 persons or more than six per cent, of the population of France are still pensioners owing to the war. Of these, 625.000 are widows, while there are nearly a million disabled soldiers and sailors. The Parliamentary vote for 1929 will be £42,000,000. The widows receive £l2 annually plus £7 per child.

A Bill is to be introduced into the Chamber of Deputies presuming that four hundred thousand wartime missing are dead, and also providing that in future wars those missing for two years shall be legally regarded as dead and their wives as eligible to re-marry.
