MAIL-VAN BROKEN OPEN

POSTAL MATTER BROACHED

Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 28.

The discovery was made at the railway yards in Auckland yesterday morning that a mail-van had been broken into and some half-dozen mail bags containing parcels ripped open. Thfe damaged bags and their contents were taken to the parcels office of the Postal Department in Albert Street, and the police, were advised of the happening. It is understood that the postal authorities have repacked the contents into other bags, and that as far as they can ascertain little or nothing of value is missing. The assumption naturally arises that the thieves failed to find that for which they were looking, and abandoned the search.

lu all there were over 30 bags of parcel mail in the van, which was loaded on Christmas Eve in readiness for dispatch on the morning of Boxing Day. It -is understood that the van was broken into in the railway yards.
