MANAWATU v. HAWKE’S BAY PROGRESS HINDERED BY RAIN Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 2S. Persistent rain stopped play on the third day of tlie Mnnawatu-llawke's Bay Hawke Cup match early this afternoon. Manawatu were going well in their second innings, having three wickets down for IS”. In the' first innings they hit up 221, Hawke’s Bay replying with 195. As tin- Hawke Cup rules state that games must be played right out, if the rain continues it is quite likely the match will be abandoned. In that ease the position of Manawatu holding the cup will he unchanged, the game not counting in any way.

To-day play was bright, Gallichan, tlie New Zealand representative, and MeVicar, who made 97 in the first innings, putting up for the partnership u>'er a hundred runs. When taking a catch off O’Brien in the morning’s play Pirie got his finger jammed between his boot and the ball, splitting a bone. Owing to a cold he caught in his back in the wet on the afternoon of the first clay’s play, Stephenson retired from the field during the morning, Ongley, the -Maliawatu captain, taking liis 1 place. At tlie commencement at 11 a.m.. Wild, one of the Manawatu opening batsmen, was standing -nt 9. and Pacey was 18. The latter faced the first over from Gilbertson, but Wild was troubled by Beuth’s bowling. Runs were slow in appearing. O'Brien later took over from Beuth. and Evans from Gilbertson. Thirty-five minutes’ saw 15 runs come on the board. Wild mistimed when Evans varied his pace, giving a difficult catch to Owen, fielding as substitute. McViear went to tlie wicket. Yarwood had the bails off smartly when Pacey went out to one from Stejihenson. At this stage, 67 runs were on the board. Gallichan opened with a boundary. Mitchell replaced Stephenson when Gallichan was piling on the runs. The century was reached in 135 minutes. At 37, Gallichan gave a difficult chance to Mitchell, off Evans. Evans and Gilbertson, when bowling, slowed up the scoring for a period before the luncheon adjournment. Gallichan and McVicar continued in a quiet, steady rain after dinner. Rainey and Shepherd took the bowling, and run-getting was steady, although Rainey kept Gallichan fairly quiet. Both batsmen pleased the stand with several fours, 42 runs going on the board in 25 minutes. The rain continued unabated, and after 25 minutes’ play tlie teams sought the stand. When play ceased, 183 runs were showing. Gallichan had reached 63, and McVicar 49. MANAWATU. First innings 221 ■ Second Innings. Young, lbw., b. Beuth 1 Wild, c. Owen. b.
