PALMERSTON BUSINESS.

Palmerston North, December 28.

Unfortunately for Edward Peters, he accosted a plain clothes constable when begging, last evening, thus causing his appearance in the Magistrate’s Court here this morning. Peters said that after a few drinks he did not know what he was doing. He was convicted and discharged by Messrs. W. F. Durward and A. Buchanan, the presiding J.P.’s.

Pleading guilty to being idle and disorderly, Frederick Bevins, aged 55, a labourer, was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. Charles Gladwell, alias Willmlngtoh, labourer, aged 22, pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly and also to stealing surgical instruments to the value of £3, the property of the Wellington Hospital Board. Senior Detective Quirke said accused had been in New Zealand for five years, having come from Home. After coining to Palmerston North, some time ago he had done nothing. At present he was £ll behind with his board. Interviewed; he admitted the thefts of the instruments. If placed under the probation officer it would be seen that he got work. He was ordered to pay the £ll owing, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months.
