SOUTH WAIRARAPA MEETING CRUSADER WINS CHIEF EVENT (By “Overcheck.”) The weather was still wet for the second day of the South 'Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. The sum of £5523 was handled by the totalisator as against £6413 for last year. The figures for the meeting were £12,396 compared with £15,362 last year. MARTINBOROUGH HANDICAP. Rita Thorpe failed to leave the mark correctly and drifted right back, the early leaders being Hardy Jack and Huia Lomond. After four furlongs had been covered the leading division consisted of Hardy Jack, Huia Lomond, Ambleside, Olatrice, and Kate Logan. The latter assumed command in the back stretch from Hardy Jack, Olatrice and Ambleside. Olatrice was in attendance on Kate Logan entering the straight, but she then tired, Kate Logan and Hardy Jack coming on with Ambleside in hot pursuit, well out in the centre of the course. The latter, finishing strongly, got up in time to win by a length from Kate Logan, with Hardy Jack a close third. Olatrice was an indifferent fourth. TARATAHI HANDICAP. There were only four starters in the race, in which Pilot lead throughout. After a furlong had been covered the order was Pilot, Billy Bingen, Flora Volo and Nelson Request. Entering the straight Pilot had a substantial lead, Billy Bingen having gone to a break and lost ground. At the stand Flora Volo was in second berth. A little further on Billy Bingen again broke and dropped back last. Racing down the back stretch Flora Volo broke, allowing Nelson Request to run into second position. On the bend into the straight. Pilot was some three or four lengths to the good. Flora Volo and Nelson Request racing abreast. In the run home a good race ensued, but Flora Volo again broke and lost her position. About 20 yards from the post Pilot made his first mistake, but he struck his correct gait again a stride or two from the post, and won by a narrow margin from Nelson Request. Flora Volo was third, Billy Bingen being right down the course. CARTERTON HANDICAP. Black Ballin was scratched, leaving seven runners. Lady Author was slow off the mark, and tangling, dropped right back. Louie Dillon was the early leader from Logan's Pride, Ngahuia, and Halmore, but after four furlongs had been covered the latter was in charge, Logan’s Pride, Louie Dillon, Ngahuia and Lady Jewel being in close attendance. Ngahuia improved his position down the back, and lead round the bend from Logan's Pride and Halmore. The latter broke at this stage and went back. A good race home resulted in Ngahuia winning from Lady Jewel and Logan’s Pride, with Louie Dillon fourth. MANGAPARI HANDICAP. Danny Boy was slow in finding his feet, losing a lot of ground in consequence. El Direct lead out of the straight from George the Fourth, who tangled and gave wav to Crusader and Sailor Boy. Down the' back Sailor Boy ran into second position. On the bend El Direct was still in charge from Crusader, George the Fourth, and Sailor Boy. Shortly after entering the straight Crusader ran to the front, and lead at the stand from El Direct, George the Fourth, Danny Boy, Sailor Boy, Zella, and Great Delight. Zella Improved her position on the bend. Racing down the back'the field bunched, but George the Fourth soon drifted right back. El Direct cried enough racing round the bend, where Crusader put daylight between himself and the others. Sticking to his work in good style, Crusader won very comfortably from Great Delight, who was well ahead of Sailor Boy, and El Direct was a poor fourth. KEATHERSTON HANDICAP. Halmore and Realty forfeited their engagements in this race, for which Gold Cast was made favourite. Matenga turned round when the word go was given, while Alexis too again dwelt badly. Waipuke, Golden Morn, Waitipopo and Gold Cast were the leaders out of the straight. Racing round the bend Waipuke slipped and dislodged her rider, but fortunately the others escaped trouble. Golden Morn had a break of several lengths as the field raced down the back of the course, Waitipopo and Alexis being closest to her. After four furlongs had been covered the others had somewhat bridged the gap between them and Golden Morn. The latter slowed up on the bend, and Alexis ranged up alongside her as they straightened up for home. In a good race down the straight Golden Morn struggled on and just managed to win from Gold Cast, whose run was delayed a fraction of a second to long. Alexis was right up third and Waitipopo fourth. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Flora Volo was scratched, leaving only three runners, and a good start was effected. After three furlongs had been covered, Nelson Request ran up to Billy Bingen, who immediately went to a break and before he regained his correct gait Ben Bingen had run past him. Passing the post the first time Nelson Request was about 24 yards out from Ben Bingen, who was going very steadily. As they turned down the back the second time, Ben Bingen was close behind Nelson Request. Five furlongs from home Ben Bingen assumed command, and was four lengths to the good as they turned for home. When asked for a final effort Nelson Request broke, but his driver got him back to his gait quickly. Ben Bingen won on the bit from Nelson Request, with Billy Bingen the best part of a furlong away. GREYTOWN HANDICAP. Zolock Wood was the only scratching. As usual George the Fourth began smartest, and at the stand led from Hilltop. Baron Bingen, Welcome Pearl, . Cora Tacks, Great Delight, and Sailor Boy. George the Fourth and Hilltop were still leading racing down the back, but before a mile had been covered Baron Bingen had raced into first place with George the Fourth at the head of six or seven others. Rounding the bond Sailor Boy moved up smartly and led into the straight from Great ‘Delight. This pair had a rare tussle down the home straight. Great Delight wearing Sailor Boy down and winning nicely though with not a great deal to spare. Cora Tacks finished best of the others and secured third money. George the Fourth was the next to finish. Good Lady was very sore and failed to strike her gait when the field was disnatched and took no part in the race. Zella was pulled up after going five furlongs, having almost fallen on the slippery ground. Matenga gave an exceedingly poor display. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association.
