CHRISTMAS RACING

MANAWATU AND DUNEDIN MEETINGS CONTINUED GASCONY WINS PALMERSTON NORTH STAKES STAR AREA REGISTERS HIS SECOND WIN The most important racing fixtures yesterday were the middle day of the Manawatu meeting and the final day* at Dunedin. At Manawatu Gascony won the Palmerston North Stakes from Reremoana; Star Area registered his second win at the meeting by again annexing the principal handicap, while Silver Paper took the sprint. The principal handw p at Dunedin went to Royal Saxon.

MANAWATU MEETING GASCONY WINS THE ( STAKES ANOTHER WIN FOR STAR AREA SILVER PAPER’S SPRINT By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.” Palmerston North, December 27. .; The summer meeting of the Manawatuj Racing Club was continued at Awapuni' to-day, in dull, warm weather. Star Area won the principal event, the President's Handicap, from Mendip and Mountain Heath, and in the Awapuni Handicap, Silver Paper beat Arrow Lad and Nightmarch. Gascony won the Palmerston North Stakes from Reremoana, the other three starters being outclassed. Favourites had a bad run during the day, and this, coupled with the fact that the attendance was not so good as usual, was reflected in the totalisator_returns. The amount handled was £33,777, compared with £41,833 for the second day last year, a decrease of £8056. The track was in first-class order for the racing, which was of a high standard. KELVIN HANDICAP. A fine finish was witnessed in the opening event, the Hack Distance Handicap. Borsalene took charge early, and slowed the field down, but Rory Mor went up down the back, and this pair were clear of the bunch to the straight, where Henna and Courageous moved up. In a slashing finish, Rory Mor, Henna, Courageous, and Borsalene went across the line in that order, with heads between them / Gohl Bag was fifth. 1 Courageous and Henna were just a bit late in making their runs. It looked as if they should have got up. HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP. In the five-horse race for the highweight. the Aucklander, Glena Bay, was a firm favourite. He had every chance, and was well beaten. Bonhomme took the lead, and down the bad; was joined by Glena Bay, who then went out clear. Bonhomme came up again on the turn, and. entering the straight they were joined by Thurnbell, Novar being handy. Once in line, Bonhomme shot out, but Novar challenged, and in a tight finish stayed just a bit too well for Bonhomme, and won by a head. Thurnbell was two lengths away, and Glena Bay eight lengths back. Bowden contributed largely to the win of Novar. HIGHDEN HANDICAP. Grand Acre, who got out of the maiden class with a sensational dividend at Woodville, won the hack sprint all the wav. In the early stages he was attended bv Cold Air. Cloyne, Moutoa M ouder, Black Maire. Noteworthy, and Shrewd, Monetize being, slow away, and Mon Min., tailing off. Grand Acre led the same bunch into the straight, and fought off all challengers, ■winning by half a length, a similar distance separating Monetize and Shrewd. Noteworthy. Cloyne, Black Maire, and Rich Harvest were next. The winner’s performance was smart, and-he looks another very useful member of the Acre family. Monetize came from a good way back and got a bad run. Noteworthy had every chance. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Seatown started a solid favourite in the Handicap, being ridden by R. Heed, but he ran below his first day's form. Star Area, on the other hand, decisively proved his Cup victory. Mendip was the leader through the straight, but before reaching the - back stretch Vivo had charge from Star Area, then Mendip and Seatown. RedCar whipping In. Superb King ran up to third approaching the half-mile, but It was only a momentary effort, and the order turning for home was Vivo, .being headed off by Star Area, then Mendip and Seatown, with Mountain Heath and Keddar moving up. There was a great race home as they closed up, but Star Area finished best and won by a short length from Mendip, who beat Mountain Heath by a head. Keddar, Seatown. and Panther were practically in line about half a length back. , Star Area won on his merits. Every - thing ran a good race, Keddar's effort in particular being very creditable. PALMERSTON NORTH STAKES. Gascony was a slightly better fancy for the stakes than Reremoana, and they naturally monopolised the betting. Gascony soon drew ahead of Reremoana and increased his lead on the turn for home. Reremoana got after him in the straight and reduced the margin to a neck at the post, where Gascony was holding his own. * Admiral Drake was six lengths back clear of Miss Ransom. Gascony was too brilliant for Reremoana, who was the winner of the race in the last two seasons. The veteran has lost some of his dash. The rest of the field were outclassed. TERRACE HANDICAP. In the big field of 10 hacks in the Terrace Handicap backers went strongly for Areherla, ridden by R. Reed. He failed to hold a handy position soon after the start, but finished on again. He had. however, no chance at any stage. The second choice, Roi de Vai, was in the lead from the outset with Full Mark. Tea Tattle, Australis, Areherla and Shining Star. Areherla dropped out and later Australis, the order round the turn aud into the straight being Full Mark and Koi de Vai from Tea Tattle. Shining Star and Thrift. In the run to the post Full Mark hold on and beat Thrift by half a length, a similar distance separating them from Roi de Vai. with Teremoana, Areherla, Cloyne and Mothplane well up. The winner scored nicely for a smart effort. Roi de Vai had every chance. To- , wai was never sighted. HIMATANGI HANDICAP. The first handicap favourite of the day came home when Singleton scored In tlie second class open event over nine furlongs. Teri and Kilmezzo made the pace from Singleton and Imperial Spark. Rowley tailing off. There was no change till approaching the straight, where Singleton. Imperial Spark, and Maui took charge. Imperial Spark weakened over the last furlong. Where Sir Roy came fast. He failed by a length to reach Singleton, Maui being a similar distance back. Teri was elose up. followed by Imperial Spark, Clarinda, and Rowley. Sir Roy lay well back early, and could not bridge the gap. He finished strongly, and should win before returning. Maui ran a good race. The winner is a good sort. AWAPUNI HANDICAP. A sharn improvement in form was shown by Silver Paper in the open sprint. With Arrow Lad and Nightmarch he was evenlv backed. Helotis began best, and led from Doree, Silver Paper. Silver Coot, and Veronese bunched. Nightmarch getting knocked back on the turn. Helotis still had charge, with Silver Paper and Silver Coot next, then Veronese and Doree, Arrow Lad dropping back to the rear. In th? straight Silver Paper shot ahead, and then. Arrow Lad came with a brilliant run Tie had no chance with Silver Paper, how’ever, who won by two lengths. Niglitmareh finished over the beaten lot for third: throe or four lengths back Doree was fourth, then Helotis, Dobbin, J*nu Veroneau

Silver Paper, with a change of riders, ran in strikingly improved form, and won very comfortably. Neither Arrow Lad nor Nightmarch was at all lucky in the run lug. Nightmarch had a particularly bad passage. Doree ran another creditable race. Sliver Coot was prominent entering the straight, but finished well back.

The New Zealand Racing Conference made the following announcement today :— ■

“In the anpeal by Racecourse Inspector F. Cullen ag'ainst the decision of the Auckland District Committee given at an inquiry held by tlie Auckland District Committee on September 27, 1928, with ownership of the horse Cherry Ripe and the alleged partnership therein of Dr. C. C. Murphy and W. Ryan, deceased, which decision was as follows: ’That although there are suspicious circumstances connected with the case, in the opinion of a majority of the committee the evidence is conflicting and insufficient to warrant any action being taken.’ “Judgment.—This is an appeal from the decision of the Auckland District Committee, which decision is set out above. Tho substance of the charge against Dr. Murphy was that in May. 1922. he became partner with William Rjran, bookmaker, in the horse Cherry Ripe, and In the subsequent racing of the horse in Australia and New Zealand tlie horse was raced in Murphy's name and the partnership was established, so it was alleged, to enable Ryan to evade the prohibition in the rules of racing against a bookmaker owning or racing a horse. Murphy asserted that he bought the horse from Ryan in May, 1922, that after that date Ryan had no interest in tlie horse. At a thorough aud excellently conducted inquiry held by the Auckland District Committee, a majority of the committee decided that the charge against Murphy was not proved. We regret that we are unable to accept Murphy's explanation of his connection with the horse and his relationship witli Ryan, and are unable to agree with the majoritj’ decision of the Auckland District Committee. In our opinion the charge against Murphy was conclusively established, strengthened ns it was by his own statements nnd conduct. The offence was serious and deliberate and continued over a period of years, and Murphy, ns a steward of the Jockey Club, was under a special duty to obey the Rules of Racing, is convcted of corrupt practice under the Rules of Racing, part XXXII, rule 1, clauses C and J, aud is disqualified for five years from this date. Signed: A. E. Donnelly. J. S. Marrell, IV. McA. Duncan, judges, Auckland, December 27, 1928.”
