BOAT OUT OF CONTROL

SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT AT RUSSELL

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, December 27.

A sensational accident happened during the progress of an outboard motor race at Russell this afternoon. Humbug, which had already won two races, was going well in the third when she tipped her owner (L. Sterecker) out in negotiating a turn. The boat did not capsize, but continued going round in circles at fully 25 miles an hour. With uncanny luck it escaped crashing into the moored launches, and meanwhile spectators held their breath. A man in a dinghy rowed out towards the wild careering boat, but the latter hit his dinghy ■ and went clean over the top of it, and capsized the small craft and its occupant into the water. The spectators thought that the man was killed, but he bobbed up again and swam around. The impact of the collision had the effect of turning the propeller out of the water and so'the boat’s career was ended. The owner and the rower of the dinghy were brought ashore unharmed.
