SHUNTER KILLED

CRUSHED BETWEEN TWO WAGONS The Coroner (Mr. J. FI. Salmon, S.M.), presided over an inquest held yesterday morning to inquire into the death of Trevor William McCallum, a shunter, who;was crushed between two railway wagons in the Thorndon railway yards on Christmas Eve, and who died the following evening. SeniorSergenat Scott conducted the proceedings. Evidence of identification was given by John Francis Wyatt, foreman, at Thorndon railway yards, where deceased was employed. Witness stated that while deceased was engaged in shunting operations at about 6.30 p.m. on December 24, a derailment took place, and witness noticed McCallum pinned between two wagons above the step. He did not actually see the accident. Deceased was extricated as soon as possible, and sent to the hospital by the Free Ambulance. Dr. Alfred B. Cook, of the staff of. the Wellington Hospital, said that deceased was admitted to the hospital at 7 p.m. on December 24. He saw the man an hour later, prior to which he had been examined by Dr. Lynch. The finding was that deceased died at the hospital on December 25, the cause of death being severe pelvic and internal injuries caused through being crushed between two railway wagons. No blame was attachable to anyone. ACCIDENTAL DROWNING The Coroner also presided over an inquest relating to Charles A. Rodman. a middle-aged man who was drowned on the evening of December 25. Evidence was given by a companion of deceased, who said that on the evening in question he went on to the Taranaki Street Wharf, where he met deceased, who asked him for a drink. Witness handed to him a bottle, out of which he drank. Deceased later fell into the water. The verdict was that the cause of death was accidental drowning. Sergeant C. Duke conducted the inquest.
