TELEGRAPH TRAFFIC

BUSY HOLIDAY - PERIOD An exceptionally busy time was experienced by the staff of the Wellington Telegraph Oflice in coping with the telegraph traffic on Christmas Eve. From an early hour messages commenced to pour into the office. The messages forwarded, received, and transmitted on Monday were far in excess of those for Christmas Eve of last year. The messages forwarded totalled 10,340, as against 6184 for last year. Those received numbered 15,809. whereas there were only 9807 on Christmas Eve twelve months ago. There were 30,666 transmissions, as against 23,382 in 1927. The three working days preceding Christmas Eve —Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, of last week —were also strenuous for the telegraphic staff, a heavy volume of business being dealt with. The messages forwarded by the Wellington office on Monday and the three preceding working days totalled 24,972, last year's total for a similar period being 25,130. The messages received for the same period made up the large total of 35,470, as against 30,755. There were 50,919 transmissions for the four days, as against 51,180 in 1927. Figures published previously were in some respects inaccurate.
