BOWLS

WELLINGTON CENTRE TOURNAMENT FINE WEATHER & GRIPPY GREENS THREE ROUNDS OF RINK PLAY Fine weather, with next to no wind, favoured the bowlers yesterday, when, after a day's delay due to rain, a start was made with the annual tournament of the Wellington Bowling Centre. Forty-four rinks (176 players) are concerned, and they are divided into four sections —two of ten rinks each and two of twelve. Owing to Wednesday’s downpour the greens were on the grippy side, but all were in good order for play. The greens used were those of the Karori, khandallah, Island Bay. and Lower Hutt Clubs. In the absence of the president (Mr. M. Marks), who is suffering from an injury to a knee, the tournament was formerly opened by the secretary (Mr. It. W. Shallcrass). He conveyed a message from the president, who regretted the day’s delay, but hoped that, now a start was being made, fine weather would prevail, and everyone concerned would thoroughly enjoy the tournament. He expressed the hope that the long list of prizes offered would induce nothing more than keen wholesome competition. On behalf of the president he wished all bowlers the compliments of the season, and intimated that all the post-sectional games and final would be played on the Karori green. The results of yesterday’s play areas follow: — FIRST ROUND SECTION A. Played at Khandallah. Kelburn: Forgie, Williams, Lomas. Stephens (s.), 27; Island Bay: McAneny, Herron. Taylor, Hale (s.), 14.
