NOTES ON THE RACING FINE FINISH IN THE CUP Dominion Special Service. Auckland. December 26. A hot favourite in Cashier failed iu the Oucen's Plate. He was up third nt the turn, after being slow to move, but was really beaten on bis merits. Gold Money was last away, but at the half-mile she had run up behind Lido, Tcheka. Cashier, and Kinross. Tcheka and Gold Money drew out in the straight, the former heading Gold Money in the last stride to win by a head, with Lido a surprise third, aiid Amor. Kinross, and Modest Boy next. Go’d Money was extremely unlucky, as she looked a good thing with an even start. Tcheka was first out, and lie was well handled by Reed. Amor and Kinross ran good races, .and should improve. FOAL STAKES. Supremacy was a shade better backed than Honour in the Foal Stakes. Speed Light began best, and led Ceremony at the half-mile, where Supremacy. Carl Idem, and Honour were bunched next. Ceremony and Speed Light then put a big break on Supremacy and Honour, and so they ran to the turn. Here the leaders were stopping, and Supremacy dashed up to win convincingly by two lengths from Honour, with < Ceremony third, and Speed Light and Imperial Prince next. Supremacy won like a champion, and Honour also finished well. Ceremony and Speed Light cut at each other all the wav. Ceremony possesses great brilliancy, and might do better on a fast track* Gold Tinge ran poorly. ROBINSON HANDICAP. Storm Fiend and Philippic were unexpectedly better backed toan vallar iu the Robinson Handicap. Vallar began fast., and practically made a one-horse race of It his nearest followers at the half-mile being Arihana, Bannock, Winsome Boy. and Air King. Arihana. Air King. Eager Rose, and Mussie followed him into the straight, but Vallar won easily from Mussie. with War Officer third, and Arihana and Good Boy next. Vallar is high class, put outside him thev were not a good lot. Philippic and Zeuxis were never in winning positions, the latter beginning very slowly. AUCKLAND CUP. Count Cavour, Oratrlx arid Laughing Prince were backed in that order for the Auckland Cup. Corinax and Papatu together made the pace from Talisker, Catkin and Desert Glow, with Laughing Prince and Hoylake in the middle of the field. Five furlongs from home Catkin stole away from Corinax, and Laughing Prince moved up. Catkin was three lengths clear at the turn from Corinax, with Laughing Prince Desert Glow, and Count Cavour next. Catkin was wavering nt the distance, where Corinax and Laughing Prince joined In, a magnificent finish, seeing Corinax shoot out in the last few strides. He beat Laughing Prince by threif-quartors of a length. Catkin was two lengths away third, with Count Cavour fourth and ths.' after a gap were Hoylake, Talisker an % Desert Glow. Corinax proved a great stayer and Laughing Prince secured the honours by a sterling effort, the weight just beating him. Catkin's rider went out a little early, otherwise he may have won. Count Cavour ran honestly but lacked brilliancy. In the early stages Talisker pulled too hard. Hoylake was disappointing and Oratrlx never threatened danger. GRAFTON HURDLES. Hannon’s bracket carried the public confidence in the Grafton Hurdles, but they failed badly after Ripon Abbey had ltd for a mile and a quarter. At that stage Beaumont and Lady Cintra took charge and three furlongs from home I’otoanui and I’ouri fell when closing up rapidly. Mangani then challenged Beaumont and beat him easily, n IJ.li Lady Cintra third and Wharnclil'i'e. who made up a lot of ground, fourth. Mangaitl and L’ralia also fell. Pouri looked particularly dangerous when he came down three furlongs from home. Mangani is a smart little jumper who jumped every fence in fine style. RAILWAY HANDICAP. Prime fancies in the Railway Handicap were Silvermlne, Consent and Nancy Lee, owing to the defection of Aussie and Paganelll. Nancy Loe and Silvermlne were first out. Silvermlne, Nancy Lee. Slaghunter, Billikins and Awarerc racing in that order to the turn, where Kingflolil and Consent showed up. Nancy Lee mid Sllvermine fought out the finish, tiie former winning by a length, witli Brgiht Glow finishing fast half a length back tlilrd, with White Wings, Stagbunter, Consent and High Finance next. Nothing ever looked like beating the leading pair. Consent looked likely at the five-furlong post, lint faded again. White Wings made up a lot of ground and should win later at (lie meeting. Kinglield had to cover , a lot of ground and he also should do better. NURSERY HANDICAP. Gemllght was a pronounced favourite over Eaglet in’ the Nursery Handicap. Eaglet jumped out witli Bennie, but was soon clear and led to the turn from Tea Queen, Dalston and Desert Song. Eaglet, then went on to win easily from Dalston, witli Tea Queen third and Bennie, Polyxena, and Gemllght next. The winner is very smart. Dalston. a half-brother to Stormy, paid a doublefigure for second. He is a tine youngster that will improve. Gemllght lacked dash, although he was drawn wide out and ran fairlv. ( Tea Queen showed plenty ol speed, but faded iu the straight.

CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. Prodice headed a big pool ou the Christmas Handicap. Ballymoy 11, Concentrate. and Toxeuma were prominent to the turn, Toxeumlt being first into the straight from Sir Russell, Coucentrate, Red Heckle, Yaqui, and I’rodice. Then Pegaway came witli a great run to beat. Toxeuma by less than a length, with Red Heckle a neck away third and Prodice right up fourth. Coucentrate, Siaosi, and Master O'Rorke were next to finish. Pegaway is right at his best, and will race well through the meeting. Toxeuma, Red Heckle, and Prodice all ran solid races, but King Lu, Royal Doulton, and Le Choucas failed badly. Prince Lu bolted twice before the start, going once round the course on the second occasion. ... The stewards held an inquiry into alleged interference between Corinax and Laughing Prince at tiie finish of the Cup, but saw no reason to alter the judge’s placlngs. A strong southerly wind with light rain ushered in the opening of the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club at Awapuni to-day, and heavier rain early prevented numbers of patrons from attending. The track was soft, but In good order, and the racing interesting. In a false-run race for the Manawatu Cup an outsider in Star Area stole a inarch on his rivals, and won from Seatown and Mountain Heath. Benzora won the sprint event from Arrow’ Lad and Jeannette. Favourites w’ere not too successful during the day, and this, coupled with the threatening w’eather outlook, caused a drop In the totalisator receipts. The amount put through was .£43,999 as against £54.647 last Boxing Day, a decrease of £10,648. TOKOMARU HURDLES. Red Bank won the Hurdles practically from end to end. The solid favourite Elysianor was first to show’ out. but Cohesion and Red Bank soon joined him. and when settled down Rod Bank had charge from Cohesion and Elysfanor, then a good interval to the others, headed b.v Diana’s Lad and Panorama, with Vexa-

tious and Braeman tailing off. Panorama went up down tiie back, where Cohesion hit a fence and dropped out. Red Bank led into the straight from Elysianor and Panorama, and in a hard light to the post won by a length from Panorama, who beat Elysianor by half a length. There was a gap of several lengths to Diana s Lad, W’ith Othon and Braeman next, and Cohesion last. , t , Red Bank won w’ell and Elysianor had every chance. Panorama ran a good race, but none of the others had any chance. Cohesion was not too w’ell handled, and when he hit the fence down the back he was put right out of the race. Vexatious fell at the second last fence when out of any chance of filling a place, and J. Blanche broke a collai* bone. MAIDEN RACE.

A thumping dividend was paid by the Gisborne horse Mangaharei when he won the Maiden race, and there was no fluke about his win. Roi de Vai, who drew No. 1, was a good favourite and lie began well, but St. Melba, on the outer at No. IS. was the best beginner, and he led to the turn from the bunch, whicli was then headed by Mangaharei, Black Maire, Kentish Lady, Biotic and Grattan. When tiie straight was reached St. Melba and Mangaharei drew away. The latter came on and won by a length and a half from St. Melba, who was then being overhauled by the bunch, in which Monetize was a clear third from Black Maire, Hoi de Vai, Balloon and Grattan In a heap. The winner scored decisively. St. Melba might have made it harder if he had drawn nearer in, hut really Mangaharei scored very comfortably. Roi de Vai ran a good race and was not too lucky. TARARUA HANDICAP. The Aucklander Glena Bay was a solid favourite for the hack distance race, but lie failed badly. Bissac made the pace from Shining Star, Cloyne, King Quex, Gold Bag and Kilburn. As they raced for the straight the field closed up and Courageous became prominent on the outer. King Quex then pushed through and went on to win by half a length from Rory Mor, who had Henna and Courageous right up with him. Cloyne and Birkbeck headed the bunch. The winner scored well, for he was stopped on the home turn. Henna came from well back. MANAWATU CUP. The Cup race was a regular boil-over, a rank outsider in Star Area, mainly through the tactics of his rider (T. Webster) stealing a march on tiie field and getting a break which in the finish just got him home. Star Area was not long In showing out clear, and he then settled down at a very moderate pace, followed by Seatown, Mountain Heath, Mandane, and First Sight, the rear being brought up by Novar. On the turn out of the straight Mandane broke a blood vessel aud was pulled up. Star Area as they ran into the back stretch Increased his lead from Seatown, Mountain Heath, First Sight, and Merry Damon. At the half Imperial Spark and Hynanna began to improve their positions, but on the home turn it was fairly plain that Seatown was the only one with any chance of catching the leader. He made his run before reaching the straight, and was up with Star Area at the last furlong post. Star Area, however, had a reserve run, and he won by half a length from Seatown, who was four lengths in front of Mountain Heath, and then at intervals came First Sight. Historic, Discourse, Imperial Spark, and Hynanna. It was a false run race, and the credit for the win largely goes to young Webster, who made the pace to suit his mount. Where he really won the race was about six furlongs from home, where he slightly increased the good lead he had. .Seatown ran a fine race and will probably be improved by it, though he looks very light. First Sight never looked like getting up. nor did any of the others. The result may have been entirely different in a truerun race. Hynanna looked well and ran quire a fair race. Mandane, of course, was immediately eliminated when she bled, up to which stage she was holding a nice position and going well. NURSERY HANDICAP. Clever carried her array of backers through in the two-year-old handicap, and although Fjrst Money pushed her at the finish, Clever was alvyays the winner. Clever, First Money, and Praeda soon sorted themselves out. and were well clear of the straggling bunch on tiie turn. As they came into line Clever went on, and, challenged by First Money, beat him by three-parts of a length. I’raeda was four lengths back, followed by Admiral Drake, Becky Sharp. Statuary, and Hot Spring. Imperial Guard played up and got left, doing a gallop home after tiie others had finished. Belcaire was never prominent. Nothing had a chance with the first three. GILLIES HANDICAP. For the hack sprint Veronese was a good first choice, but after getting out well and having every chance she was beaten by Borsalene a furlong from home. Veronese in tiie running was attended b.v Shot Silk, First Ruler, Borsalene, and Full Mark. Shot Silk took charge on the turn, but Veronese was in front turning for home, and was then challenged and almost immediately beaten by Borsalene, who had a margin of a length at the post. . First Ruler was half a length back, and then came Australis, Full Mark, Shot Silk, Thrift, and Noteworthy. Borsalene was always going well in behind the leaders, and won well. First Ruler, having her first race for a couple of months, and her third of the season, ran particularly well. Australis was not too lucky. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP. Benzora justified his favouritism In the open sprint, but he had not much to spare from Arrow Lad in the finish. Helotis began best, Sliver Paper being slow away, and down the back Lady Ideal. Jeanette. Arrow Lad and Benzora were the leaders nearest attendants. Lady Ideal was beaten on the turn, and once in line Benzora and Arrow Lad drew out, Benzora beating Ills opponent by a neck. Jeanette was two lengths away, with Doree a close fourth. Then came Silver Paper and H The iS flrst pair outclassed the rest, but Jeanette ran a fair race. Doree from No. 1 did not begin too well; she lost her place and went back to last and then finished on into fourth place. Hers was a good performance under difficulties. Gascon}' and Silver Coot were scratched at ‘>ls p.m. Silver Paper was never dangerous. but ran better than he did at Rlccarton. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. Mendip failed In the much-reduced field in the concluding event, but he ran a great race after losing his place more than once on the journey. He was unlucky. Kilinezzo tried to win all the way, but Panther wont up to him entering straight and in a stirring finish Panther got up in the last stride after they had see-sawed for a fnrlong. Mendip finished on again a length back. The rest were well beaten. Miss Pat and Superb King, who got away slowly, being live, hard ridden to the front with Kilmezzo earlv. finished weakly. Panther ran one of his best races: apparently lie likes the sting out of the ground, but all the same it was with the scratchings not a hard race to win.

WAIPUKURAU MEETING AMALGAMATION HANDICAP TO LOCARNO KAIHORO WINS JUVENILE AND TAHOA Dominion Special Service. Napier, December 26. The Waipukurau Jockey Club had a showery day for their summer meeting to-day. The course was in perfect order aud the attendance was a record one for

a summer meeting. The fields were large and the racing good. The totalisator handled £14,120, which was an increase o£ £SS9 on last year's total o£ £13,531. The stewards held an inquiry into the cause of Hie falls in Tahora, Porangahau and Braeburn Handicaps and found in each instance that the mishap was accidental. „ . MAIDEN RACE. There were twelve runners in the Maiden Race and Goodwill carried most money, with Topete and Imateragirl next in order. The result was in doubt almost up to the last stick, the finish being very close. Chopin won by a neck from Topere, with Merry Mixture third and Goodwill fourth. The favourite was slow at getting away. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Kaihoro was a strong order for the Juvenile Handicap, Citicle, Winnington . and King Manu being backed in that order. The public gauged the situation correctly, for the four most fancied finished in the order in which they were backed. Kaihoro won rather easily. Citicle’s rider, however, failed to draw the weight on returning to scale, and Winnington was therefore placed second and King Manu third. AMALGAMATION HANDICAP. There were three withdrawals from the Amalgamation Handicap, leaving five to go to the post. Locarno was entrusted with most money, Pale Star being second choice. Tanagra led nearly all the way, but in the straight both Locarno and Pale Star challenged, the favourite winning by a length from Pale Star, who was half, a length in front of Tanagra. Imarosebud was fourth. TAHOA HACK HANDICAP. Kaihoro with a 71b. penalty was considered unbeatable in the Tahoa Hack Handicap of a distance of five furlongs. Freezout and Brown Sugar being two next fancied. Once again Kaihoro pulled her supporters through, winning easily by two lengths from Brown Sugar, Plimmerton and Golden Shadow third and fourth respectively. King Manu fell in the straight when running just behind Kaihoro. PORANGAHAU HANDICAP. Kalos and Rabbi carried the bulk of the money between them in the Porangahau Handicap, but both got a bad run. Imperial Fame fell when in the lead between the six and seven furlongs posts, knocking Rabbi back to last and bringing down Kalos, who was unable to clear the fallen horse, although he tried to jump over. Fortunately neither horses nor riders were seriously hurt. The mishap left Jeu, High Court and Ahalama in the lead. When heads were turned for home High Court took charge, and. stalling off a run by Fairone, won by four lengths. Both first and second paid nearly double figures. BRAEBURN HANDICAP. Eleven were saddled up for the Braeburn Handicap (gentlemen riders). First Prince with J. Morris in the saddle was made a good favourite, Belgian Queen being second choice. After going a furlong Merry Mixture slipped and lost his rider. Merry Wanderer led for a time with Rakauponga and Grand National next. In the straight the field closed up. Abisogne, patiently ridden, came through in good style and won by a length from Heather Blend. Wilmoreana was third and Rakauponga fourth. OPEN FLYING HANDICAP. Eight runners were in the Open Flying Handicap, Hnikai being first selection, and Millais and Epistle next best backed. Taneagre and Millais was the order to the home bend, where Millais headed Tanagra, and went on to win by three Ingths from Tanagra. Queen’s Choice was third, and Huikai fourth. LAKE HACK HANDICAP. For the last race of the day, the Lake Hack, a field of ten faced the _ starter, favouritism resting with King s Jest, Tea Lady being second fancied. Brown Sugar and Goodwill followed closely in the betting. Charmaline led the greater part of the journey, but gave way in the straight to Tea Lady. Kings Jest, and Brown Sugar. A good finish saw Lea Lady win by half a length from King s Jest, who was a similar distance in front of Brown Sugar, with Goodwill just beating Charmaline on the iiost for fourth position. ____ DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association.
