There was no fire brigade and no organised water supply, and the residents formed a bucket brigade and fought the fire desperately from roof to roof, but their efforts to stem the conflagration were futile. The damage amounted to from £70,000 to £BO.OOO, one firm losing Christinas stock valued 'at £25,000. Half the other side of the street was burned three months ago.
