“TALKIES” FOR NEW ZEALAND

MR. H. HAYWARD’S OPINION OF DEVICE

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, December 26.

“An impending shadow over the whole world of entertainment” was the description of the invention of the “talkie” film given by Mr. Henry Hayward on his return from Australia. Mr. Hayward said several leading Australian theatres were being equipped with the device, and a staff of ten electricians had been brought from America to supervise installations. Shortly, apparatus would be introduced into several large New Zealand theatres. “Whatever changes may come about, the silent picture will never be seriously displaced,” said Mr. Hayward. “I am inclined to agree with Schenk, who is perhaps the wisest as well as richest man in the movie business in America, that the most that ‘talkies’ can attain is to be a sister or handmaiden of the silent picture.”
