MANAWATU v. HAWKE’S BAY SLOW SCORING IN HAWKE CUP MATCH Palmerston North, December 26. Rain caused a postponement of play until the afternoon in the Hawke Cup match, Manawatu v. Hawke’s Bay, which commenced here to-day. When stumps were drawn Manawatu had made 129 runs for the lost of six wickets. The wicket was fairly slow, but promised improvement if the rain held olf.

Ongley, the Manawatu captain, won the toss, sending Young and Wild in to opgu the home team’s innings. The former player took the first ball from Beuth. Runs came in slow singles, the first wicket falling 20 minutes after the start. With eight runs up Wild, when he had reached six, tipped a ball from Evans, and Mitchell in the slips made no mistake. After 30 minutes’ play, with 14 on the board, Mitchell held one from Young (3) off Beuth. Gilbertson replaced Evans in the bowling, after nearly two hours’ play and Rainey took over from Beuth about twenty minutes later. Pacey and McVicar at wiekets livened up the scoring a trifle, but at the end of two and a half hours’ 40 runs only were shown on the board. In the third over after the afternoon tea adjournment Pacey, who had compiled 20, was caught out of his crease when McVicar sent the ball to mid-on. Yarwood, the wicket-keeper, had the bails off just in time. Gallichan replaced him and the batting brightened considerably, both men scoring. Gallichan was going well when he attempted to lift Mitchell out of the ground to square leg. Stevenson held it right on the boundary, closing a promising knock at 12. The score board then showed 70 runs. Norris was next man in. Evans was put on again, O’Brien taking over from him later. The hundred was reached after two hours 40 minutes’ play. McVicar had a lucky “life” half an hour before the drawing of stumps, when Mitchell missed a catch off Gilberston. The ball went straight up, coming down by thte slips spinning hard. In the next over Morris was clean bowled by Beuth when he had made 10. With his total at 5, Baumber was clean bowled, also by Beuth. Pegden next took the crease. He remained there with McVicar, who was 55 not out until stumps were drawn. Details of the score at the end of the first day’s play are as follow: —
