CHRISTMAS AT OHIRO HOME

HAPPY TIME FOR INMATES Christmas traditions were well maintained at the Ohiro Home on Tuesday, and the day will long be remembered as probably the most successful of such days ever held. The quality of the entertainment provided for the inmates was exceptional, and the kindness and thoughtfulness of the master and matron, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hicks, and the staff, was a feature of the occasion. Their labours were indeed strenuous, but they were well rewarded by the happiness and gratitude of the inmates’concerned. , During the afternoon, a party from the Salvation Army Training College paid a visit to the Home, and sang carols and appropriate songs, which were greatly appreciated. In the evening, the large dining ball was decorated with flowers, streamers, and balloons, and a beautiful Christmas tree laden with gifts for one and all, made a picture that gladdened the eye. An excellent entertainment followed, in which several of the inmates took part, The Felix Orchestra opened proceedings and during the evening, gave great pleasure with their selections. Miss Grace Kennedy played two violin solos, accompanied by Miss I. Kennedy, at the piano, in delightful style; and Mr. and Mrs. Childs, who are very popular at the Home, sang duets in their usual captivating manner. The feature of a very ime programme, however, was the dancing ot three children, Peggy McKercher, and Vidris and Lola Kemmers. Die toriner, in solo dancing, was extremely pretty and dainty, and the concerted dancing of the Kemmers sisters was exceptionally wen done. They each received nn ovation tor a splendid performance. The following also contributed to the programme Misses Olive Hardwicke May Hardwieke, Weston, Mesdmnes Walker and Groth, Rev. Carpenter, and Messrs. Pratt, Austin. Homer, Hickey, and Hunt. Refreshments were served during the evening, and the distribution of presents from the tree brought to a close ,n notable day. Several members of the Wellington Hospital Board were present, including Mr. G. Petherick (chairman of the-bticial Welfare Committee). Semple, M.P., were also preSel At the conclusion of the proceedings, Mr. Petherick, on behalf of the board, thanked the master, matron, and staff for their ungrudging work in the interests of the inmates and board, not only dining the Christmas festivities, but throughout the year. He assured them that their work and loyalty was greatly appreciated. The superintendent replied, and 'honked most heartily all those who contributed or helped in any way to make the day such a success.
