TROTTING

SOUTH WAIRARAPA MEETING NATIVE HERO WINS CUP Dominion Special Service. Carterton, December 26. For the opening day of the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting the weather was showery. The attendance was fair, and the course was heavy. The totalisator handled £6873, against £8949 last year. TRIAL HANDICAP. There were no scratchings in the Trial Handicap, Kate Logan being installed favourite. Olatriee failed to move away and drifted back to almost last before striking her gait. Gang Awa wastflrst out, and led throughout. At the post the first time round the order was Gang Awa, Hardy Jack, Kate Logan, Bonny Light, and All Red, the others being strung out. There was little change in positions until down the back, where Olatriee moved up into fifth place, but this left her without dash. Round the betid Hardy Jack dropped baek. Gang Awa held a lead of about three lengths as they turned for home. Kate Logan was under pressure over the last furlong, but could not get up. All Red did best of the others, who were headed by Hardy Jack, but it was an indifferent fourth. SUMMER HANDICAP. Pilot was the early leader, Flora Volo being the slowest to find her feet. Racing round the bend Pilot and Tamahine were out in front, but the latter broke and lost ground. At the stand the order was Pilot, Tamahine, Flora Volo, Nelson Request and Billy Bingen. Just before the bend Flora Volo broke, and unsettled Nelson’s Request. Down the back Tamahine ran into the lead, Pilot breaking and dropping back. Flora Volo put in a spirited dash and followed Tamahine round the bend, but the imported mare again lost ground through breaking. Racing down the straight Flora Volo bore out, and just when she looked like catching Tamahine she again broke, allowing the latter to win nicely by about two lengths. Nelson Request wks an indifferent third. BEY HANDICAP. Our Nancy failed to go away, and really took no part in the race. The early leaders were Logan’s Pride and El Direct. Passing the stand this pair still led from Security, Lady Jewel and Ngahuia. Racing round the bend out of the straight Logan’s Pride took the rails from El Direct. As the field raced down the back El Direct raced into the lead from Logan’s Pride, with Security about, three lengths away in front of a bunch, but from this stage the latter gave ground. Racing into the straight Logan’s Pride was feeling the effects of his pace-making, and in the run home was beaten for second money by Lady Jewel. Ngahuia was fourth. Security raced well for a mile, but the heavy going then appeared to find a weak spot. WAIRARAPA CUP. Sailor Boy took no part in the race, his driver being out of the sulky when the field was dispatched. Crusader was the early leader from Native Hero and George the Fourth. Racing down the back the latter went out in the lead and was well clear at the entrance to the straight. At the stand the order was George the Fourth, Native Hero, Baron Bingen, Great Delight, and Zella. As they raced down the back the leaders bunched, but approaching the bend Native Hero shot out and was never, afterwards in danger of getting beaten, winning by about 30 yards. Great Delight Just beat the faster-finishing Crusader for second money, with George the Fourth in fourth position. BOXING DAY HANDICAP. Richmond Lass and Gold Cast were scratched for the Boxing Day Handicap. Alexis was slow away, Realty assuming command from Bessie Bingen and Mary Brown. The latter closed up with the leading pair as they approached the bend into the straight, at which point Bessie Bingen was flying distress signals. The final stages were fought out by Realty and Mary Brown, the former winning with ■ a little in hand. Alexis and Golden Morn baCk nextt ® flnlsb > but they, were well MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. There were only three starters in this event, viz., Tamahine, penalised 48 yards for his earlier success, Nelson’s Request and Billy Bingen. Nelson Request broke immediately, and Tamahine fan past him in the first couple of hundred yards. Tamahine then broke, but did not lose ground. Down the back Billy Bingen was-well out in front but broke, and lost a good deal of ground. At the end of a mile Billy Bingen was two lengths ahead of Tamahine. with Nelson Request about ten lengths further back. The latter improved his position over the next furlong, and was only a length behind Tamahine as they raced down the back stretch. Shortly after Billy Bingen broke, and was passed by the other pair. Nelson Request made a bold effort in the straight, but again went to a break about fifty yards from home, leaving Tamahine a comfortable winner by three lengths. Billy Bingen was 30 yards further back. CLAREVILLE HANDICAP. George the Fourth got away best; and soon had a break of several lengthy on the field. At the post the first time the order was George the Fourth, Great Delight, Kama and Welcome Pearl. The leader was still going strongly as they commenced to race down the back, where the remainder of the field bunched. On the bend Great Light went after George the Fourth and was right up with him, but he then went to a break and the others were upon him before he could be steadied. Sailor Boy then set out after George the Fourth but. could not bridge the gap, the latter winning handsomely by several lengths. Good Lady finished best of the others and secured third money. Welcome Pearl was fourth.
