Advice received by the Board of Missions states that the Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross was delayed during her cruise among the South-West Pacific Islands, and is not. expected to return to Auckland uut.il the first week in January. CASE OIL FOR NEW ZEALAND. Advice from Sydney states the motorship Cape York, of 5207 tons, has been chartered to load case oil in America for New Zealand and Australia. FAMOUS RECORD-BREAKER. If any vessel has earned the title of the world’s wondership it is the Mauretania, which, though she has attained her majority, appears to go from strength to strength, writes “Syren anil Shipping.” Her latest performance is a round trip from Southampton to New York anjl back to Plymouth in 12£ days, the time spent on the other side being only 32 houi... During tills brief stay in port. the. ship had to be thoroughly cleaned, provisioned and bunkered with 5000 tons of oil fuel and generally prepared for her large contingent of east-bound passengers. Thu reason for the hurry was the necessity of coping with the heavy rush of tourist traffic. Though the whole of her saloon accommodation was fully booked, there was a big waiting list, for subsequent ships. The average speed of the Maretania’s Atlantic crossing was 25.3 knots, and there were periods when she did over 26J, a truly marvellous achievement.
