BEACH GALA AT PETONE

GOOD ATTENDANCE FOR OPENING DAY.

. The wind which blew yesterday afternoon and evening did not prevent large crowds of people from attending the gaja on the Petone beach and from joining in "the fun of the fair.” Staig’s amusement apparatus, which has been brought from Hamilton, includes a merry-go-round, ocean wave, and ehair-o-plane. The sideshows, which are both numerous and diverse, include darts, skittles, and an ingenious .model of Felix, the famous film cat, which when hit in a certain spot, shoots back a box of chocolates to the successful “skier.” Refreshments are also available. Special transport facilities have been arranged during the fair, which will continue until January 2. Owing to the heavy seas running yesterday the rowing and canoe races could not be held. The attempt of the outboard motor-boat Miss John Jamieson to break the speed record also had to be postponed. These events, however, have not been abandoned, and will take place on Saturday.
