JEWISH RABBI HONOURED

TITLE OF “MORENU”

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, December 18.

In recognition of the lifetime which the Rev. A. S. Goldstein, of Auckland, has devoted to the cause of Judaism, the title of “Morenu,” meaning “our teacher,” a much prized and seldombestowed distinction, has been conferred upon him by the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, the Very Rev. Dr. J. H. Hertz.

Writing to Rabbi Goldstein from St. James’s Place. Aidgate, London, Dr. Hertz said: “I le rn with the deepest gratification that you will soon complete fifty years in your ■ ministry to th : Auckland congregation. I now gladly confer upon you the title ‘Morenu’ in recognition of the lifetime you have devoted to the cause of Judaism. You have striven to live up to the ideal of the Jewish teacher.” The bestowal of the title was a great surprise to Mr. Goldstein, who was, of course, delighted that he should have been singled out for such a high honour. His co-religionists at Auckland and throughout New Zealand will be joined by citizens of all creeds in congratulating him upon the receipt of this honour, since Mr. Goldstein is held in the highest esteem by all.
