MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE, BY-LAW, AND CIVIL CASES Police eases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday were heard before Mr. E. l J age, S.M. George Charles Arthur Gibbs, a boilermaker, aged 43, was fined 10s., in default three days’ imprisonment, for a second offence of drunkenness. A sentence of four month’ imprisonment was imposed on Michael Lipinski, a labourer, aged 48, who was charged with the theft of £8 15s. from Michael Scott Galloway. Chief-Detective Ward stated that accused had been given ten books of art union tickets to dispose of. He had sold them all, but had failed to account for any of the money received. Horace Smith, aged 28, and Harry Newman, aged 28, were each charged with being idle and disorderly persons in that they habitually consorted with reputed thieves. Both pleaded not guilty. After evidence had been given the Magistrate said that both men were convicted thieves, and each appeared to know that the other was a convicted thief. ChiefDetective Ward stated that Newman was regarded as an active housebreaker at the present time. Mr. Page said that they both had bad criminal records, and evidently were up to no good here. Not having a driver's license cost John Munro £l. On a charge of leaving his vehicle unattended Claude F. Ryland was ordered to pay 10s.. costs only. On charges of driving in a dangerous manner Henry J. Falleni and Cecil Purcell were each fined £l, and Maurice K. Archibald. Dorotohy F. Pascoe, and Harold F. Pobar, 10s. each. Robert Hayes was fined £2 for speeding, Donald S. Marchbanks £l, Walter L-mg, Thomas Robins, Sidney A. Ed,wards, Loris J. Ewing, 10s. each. Alfred Coutts was fined 10s. on each of two charges of speeding. George P. Hatcher was fined tl for driving in a dangerous manner, and £2 for not having a driver’s license. William J. Dowdall was fined 10s. for not having efficient brakes on his motorcycle, and a similar amount for not having a driver's license. , Thomas Baker was fined fl for not having a,driver’s license, and 10s. for cutting a corner. On charges of cutting a corner F rederick Dagger and Guiseppe La Macclna were each fined £l. Harold E. O’Doherty was fined 10s. for driving in a dangerous manner, and £1 for not having a driver's license. CIVIL CASES Judgment for nlaintiffs by default was given by Mr. E. Page.
