CHRISTMAS IN RUSSIA

SOVIET’S EFFORTS TO STOP CELEBRATIONS (“Times" Cables.) (Rec. December 18,10.40 p.m.) London, December 18. “The Times” Riga correspondent states because of the prohibition of Christmas shop window displays on December 14 was widely ignored, the Soviet authorities inflicted heavy fines, and threatened more drastic penalties if the fines were ineffective. Soviet newspapers declare that it is incomprehensible that while State-owned shops and co-operative stores accumulated great stocks of goods specially associated with Christmas and decorated their windows with Christmas festoons, the Government is determined to terminate the “offensive spectacle.” Curiously enough, Soviet factories close on Christmas Day, the workers refusing to alter the date of the holiday, but the authorities warned them that it will be illegal to celebrate Christmas either according to the old or the new calendar. A large proportion of the citizens celebrate both days.
