PROHIBITION LAW

VOTE FOR ENFORCEMENT JOKE AGAINST A “WET” SENATOR (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. December 14, 7.15 p.m.) Washington, December 13. Something in the nature of a joke was played to-day on Senator Bruce, who is a pronounced “wet.” Senator Bruce, on the basis of Commissioner Doran’s statement that the effective policing of the United States and the enforcement of prohibition would cost three hundred million dollars a year asked for an approximation of 270 million dollars, which the Senate promptly passed, in order to prevent delay in a debate which Senator Bruce was ready to precipipate to discuss the fallacies of prohibition. He was thus cheated of an opportunity to talk, but it is certain that the 270 millions will be rejected when the measure comes up in conference with the House of Representatives.
