A farmer of Mangatepari, in the Thames Valley, has decided that a part-ly-tamed bittern, which has made a permanent home in a waterway on his property, is a more reliable forecaster ot rain than a wall barometer (remarks the “Taranaki News”). By observation over a long period he has eoine to regard the bird’s deep-throated booming call as a certain sign of rain. Bitterns are not often seen in the Thames Valley, although one of the species not long ago dislocated the electric supply service by flying into the wires. “By keeping house the ‘Magnet’ way, There’s time for work and time for play.”—Advt.
