THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Nominations for the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, January lb and 17, will close on Wednesday with the secretary, Mr. J. Martin, Box 1, ton, at 8 p.m.

Acceptances for the first races at the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club on December 26, 27, and 2 and final payments for the twenty-thiid Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for the summer mectnio of the Waipukurau Jockey Club on December 26 will close on Tuesday at o p.m. 11. N. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Talisker in the Auckland Cup. No far no rider has been engaged for ' ertigern, though R. McTavish may now be the most likely with Te Kara taken out.

Rapine will probably be seen out again at the Wellington summer meeting, followed by the Egmont, Taranaki, and »anganui circuit. At present he is very big in condition, and while J. H. Jeiterd does not expect him to develop anything like his best form of old there is a reasonable chance of a stake or two in the veteran yet, especially as the handicap form this season is far from strong.

Briar Root, who scored so well in the Borough Handicap on the first day at Woodville, is in the Great Northern Derby, and it is intended to let her take her place in the field at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. J. Barry has been engaged for the ride, although if Mithra were started Barry would be obliged to ride her under his engagement for the stable. Briar Root is by Chief Ruler out of Bonny Briar, an English-bred mare by Bonarosa—Spring Briar, by Galloping Simon—Briseis, by Galopin. She is a bit on the small side for a classic winner, and her form hardly suggests success at Ellerslie, but she sticks on well, and in a lean year- she cannot be denied a chance.

A Hunting Song—Mandoline gelding has recently joined J. H. Jefferd's stable, and the purchase has also been completted from the breeder, Mr. W. G.' Stead, of a yearling colt by Leighton—Catalini, thus a brother to Paleta. Mandoline, dam of the Hunting Song youngster, is by Hymettus from the Birkenhead mare Mandola, the dam of Doleful Ditty.

Zarene, the Chief Ruler two-year-old filly who created a favourable impression when she ran second to Clever on the opening day at Woodville, is out of Crown Lady by Crown Imperial II —Molly by Mystification—Reformalist by Renown-Formalist by St. Leger—Forme (dam of Cruciform and half-sister to Multiform). This is breeding of the best, and Zarene, who has already shown her galloping abllty, looks to have an excellent future career.

Goodwill, who failed to get out of the maiden class at Woodville, though showing promising form, is a four-year-old gelding by Gay Lad from the Martian mare Cheekie. Goodwill, who is trained by T. F. Quinlivan at Hastings, can be trusted to get out of the maiden ranks before long.

Luke 14’11500 stripped a rather nice-look-ing three-year-old bay gelding for his patron, Mr. J. S. McLeod, in the Novice Plate at Woodville on Thursday. This was Bernera, by Lord Quex from Perplexity, an Australian-bred mare by Varco, from Imported Dauntless by Missel Thrush. Bred by his owner, Bernera, who is well grown and stands over plenty of ground, looks the sort to turn out well. He had not raced prior to this outing.

A good deal was expected of Kinross as a two-year-old last season, but he failed to produce the promise, his only placing being a third in the first of his only three races. Two more thirds in four starts preceded his defeat into second place in the Novice Plate at Woodville on Saturday. Kinross is a good-looking chestnut by Psychology from Valley Rose by Solferino from Alisa. Valley Rose is half-sister to the dam of Kilbronsytli. On the turn in the race on Thursday Kinross was going well, but B. H. Morris had to ride him desperately to secure second place. Possibly the going prevented him from doing better, and his early promise may yet be fulfilled.

There is no denying the usefulness of the stock of Acre. They win everywhere, and the latest to come under notice is Grand Acre, who paid a substantial dividend when he won on Thursday, and looks like doing it again during the holidays.

F. Davis has Mr. T. H. Lowry’s horses in great order for the holiday racing. Gascony has made striking development, and now looks what he is, a high-class racehorse. It is a pity that sickness kept him oft the winning list as a three-year-old last season, but all going well he will win good stakes from now on. Doree ran a great race in her only start, and Clever won a double, while Great Charter, although not produced, is in similar shape. After Awapuni it is possible that Davis will patronise the Wairarapa meeting at. New Year, where Great Charter and Doree are engaged in the principal handicaps.

Miss Ransom had her first three-year-old race at Woodville on Thursday, and she shaped well enough to suggest that it will not be long before she is doing considerably better.

Kick Off, who ran a creditable third in the Gorge Handicap at Woodville on Thursday, had not started since he ran unplaced as a six-year-old in tlie Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, 1924. He was turned out by his trainer, L. Wilson, looking remarkably well. He has done a season with the Hawke’s Bay hounds, and all going well an early stake Is within reach of the old fellow.

Staghunter’s Great Northern Derby trial at Woodville was far from being a conspicuous success, and it is going to take some courage on the part of his connections to decide upon the trip to Ellerslie. Staghunter gallops well on the track, and shows out early in his races, but fades out quickly -rfhen the real pressure is applied, a fairly plain indication that the horse is not right.

Piuthair, who struck herself last month on the eve of the Levin fixture, is still out of work, which is bad luck for Mr. R. A. McKenzie, as she promised to ba able to show something like her best form during the holidays.

Speaking to J. H. Jefferd at Woodville regarding Star Stranger, he said that the Martian gelding was at present, in tha throes of the blister. He hoped that lie would have him racing again in the aut-

umn, though of course one never could prophesy about a horses chances in such a case. An encouraging feature of the trouble was that the horse had ne'er actively been lame lor more than a tew hours following the injury, and as no risks had been taken there was every prospect that he would be all right when tried again.

Although The Hawk injured himself a few days ago in the paddock, J. M. Cameron thinks he will be able to race him at Ellerslie. Goshawk’s Auckland Cupengagement is not yet certain of fulfilment, as much will depend on how he progresses during the next few days. He is not a robust horse, and his spring races left their effect, but all going well Cameron will no doubt have a shot at the big money.

Hynanna, according to his trainer, T. J. Dalv. is going along satisfactorily, in his work at Opaki, and will run in tlie Manawatu Cup. At 9.7 he has a pound more than he carried when he beat Lady Desmond and Oratrix over the mile and a.halt in the last C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Henry?, who handicapped the Derby winner. Nightmarch, when he won at Riccarton last month prior to his classic success, has rated the tliree-year-old as equal to weight-for-age in the Manawatu Cup. Another notable fact in connection with this race is that it has never been won by a three-year-old.

Of the Trentham pair of hurdle recruits at Woodville, Deluge and Decoy Bird, Deluge made the best showing, finishing fourth each day. but Decoy Bird improved a lot on his first day’s showing by finishing fifth on Wednesday. Witli experience both look like getting into the money in their new department, though it is early yet to say that they will be able to reach a high standard.

Becky Sharp (Absurd—Blackmail) had her first race here in the two-year-old event at Woodville on Thursday. She jumped ont well and held her place for about a furlong, and then commenced to drift. It looked as if the going was affecting her, and on a dry track she may be useful.

Catilex (Lord Quex—Catalina), a halfsister to Paleta, trained by It, S. Bagby for the Australian sportsman Mr. E. E. Jollv, showed good speed in the early stages of the two-year-old race on the second day at Woodville. She finished fifth, and although well back it looked like a promising . effort for a beginner.

The question of making some change in the programme covering the November Carnival Week in Christchurch is likely to engage the attention of the controlling authorities before next season’s fixtures are decided upon (says the “Press”). The opinion is widely held in sporting circles that the present strenuous programme might be curtailed with advantage, and it is suggested that tlie Canterbury Jockey Club may decide to delete one day’s racing from their four days’ meeting and increase the stakes of the remaining three days. It would then be possible to open the carnival on Monday and bring It to a conclusion on Saturday, thus saving time for visitors from north and south. The day dropped by the C.J.C. could probably be transferred to the summer meeting, and the two days for that fixture would make it more attractive than at present for outside owners.

The Sydney "Referee,” in commenting upon the fact that Moorgas was sold for 500 guineas after filling third place in the New Zealand Derby, states that anything capable of getting third in an A.J.C. or Victoria Derby could not be bought for 500gns. immediately after such a performance, and the natural inference is that there are not any Limericks among this season’s New Zealand three-year-olds.

The inclusion of Listening Post’s name for the hurdle race to be run at Wyndham suggests that he has been able to stand up to a fair amount of work. It is to be hoped that he is not being nursed into racing condition, but being brought along by solid work, as he represents class that one is always pleased to see in action.

Messrs. Pyne, Gould. Guinness, Ltd., advise that they recently effected the sale of the bar mare Miss Martial, by Winkle from Martial Air. in foal to the imported Plialaris horse Robespierre. She was bought by Mr. Maurice Harper, The Levels, Timaru. On account of Mr. J. H. Prosser, Riccarton. the same firm shipped last week per the Mamma to Mr. R. Skelton. Randwick. the brown three-year-old filly by Solferino from Formnal. This filly is a half-sister to Lovesign, a good winner here and in Australia.

The catalogue is to hand of the yearlings to be offered at the third annual New Zealand sales at' Trentham on Wednesday, January 23, by Messrs. Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., and 'William Inglis and Son, Ltd. This catalogue is the largest yet offered by these two firms, and contains yearlings from practically every wellknown breeder in the North and South Islands, and by such well-known sires as Paper Money, Leighton, Paladin, Night Raid, Solferino, Psychology, and Grandcourt. Much interest will be taken in the first progeny of four young imported stallions which have been patronised very extensively by breeders during the past two seasons. These are Arattsio by Sunstar, Last Dart by Spearmint, Shambles by Phalaris, and Weathervane by Lemberg. All four were good winners themselves, and their yearlings show the greatest promise. Catalogues may be had on application to the auctioneers.

Another Paper Money two-year-old has got. on the winning list. This was Shekels, a filly from Jean 11, aud thus a half-sister to Scion and Beau Geste, who, starting favourite, won the Nursery Handicap at Canterbury Park on December 1. She was one of the Eklerslie draft sent to the Sydney yearling sales and was sold for 130 guineas. Another winner at the same meeting was Flanghmond, a five-year-old gelding by Liinond from Leta, dam of Thespian. bred at the Koatanui stud, Wanganui.

Sportsmen generally will be interested to hear that Mr. Leo Murray, custodian of the Gisborne Racing Club's course at tlie park, has devised an appliance with a view to preventing the occurrence of false starts in racing events. A demonstration of the appliance was given on Saturday (says the “Poverty Bay Herald”) before several of the prominent trainers and riders, during barrier practice, and impressed the gathering by its simplicity and certainty in working. The appliance is designed to establish full control over the field by the starter, and according to those who witnessed its application its adoption should completely dispose of any misunderstandings between starters and riders at the barrier, with .regard to false starts.
