CRICKET
MEETING OF WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION MR. P. B. BROAD ELECTED NEW CHAIRMAN Regret was expressed at last night's meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Cricket Association at the resignation of its chairman. Mr. Q. G. Wilson, and a resolution embodying those sentiments was carried unanimously. The committee felt that it was impossible adequately to record the extent of the services which Mr. Wilson had rendered to cricket throughout New Zealand. The three'provincial associations at least were under a great obligation to him and the Wellington body was particularly indebted. He had been chairman of the council for 15 years, and his name would always be associated with three things in particular, his conversion of its financial position from a state of precarious insolvency into one of security and stability, his fight during and after the war years to keep the game alive in the district, and his energetic championship during the last seven years of the interests of the minor associations of the Wellington Plunket Shield district. Those most intimately connected with the retiring chairman knew that, apart from these activities, his influence had been incalculable by reason of his staunch adherence to the rules of cricket and his refusal to permit any variation therefrom, his insistent demand for an improved standard of play, as evidenced by the coaching scheme and importation of soil for the establishment of better wickets, and the steadiness and determination with which he had kept before successive committees the idea of their important funclions in the management and control ot the game in Wellington, and the necessity of banishing from consideration all unworthy and parochial motives. When the calls of business upon his time became less strenuous,' the committee expressed the hope that Mr. Wilson would again be able to take an active part in the management of cricket in ellingto"ir P. B. Broad was unanimously elected to’ the vacant chairmanship, members expressing confidence in his ability to fulfil ably the requirements of that oH lu’ response to a request from the Otago association it was decided that a match between the Wellington and southern elevens should be arranged for Christmas, to be played in M ellington. The Town v. Country match this season will be played on December. < and 8. the executive reserving the right to cancel the fixture in the event of the team finally available not fulfilling requirements. .Selection was left in the hands of Mr. A. M. Ongley, of Pataerston North, this to be made and m the hands of the Management Committee bef<’lSoine°'discussioii’ arose over the short how this could best be avoided. It was moved that only one match should bw nbived on that ground every Saturday. Bv this means, it was felt that the boundary difficulty would be overcome, and at the same time, interest more easily centred on the more important fixture. An amendment was broimht forward to the effect that one senior match and one junior match, the latter to be played on a new pitch in the St Mark’s corner of the -round, should be played every week, but °this was defeated, and the original motion carried, both on the casting vote of the chairman. . , In place of the new chairman, who re-si-ned his position on the senior championship committee, Mr. J. S. Hanna was appointed.
