JAPANESE TRAINING SQUADRON
TO VISIT WELLINGTON
DISTINGUISHED OFFICERS
On Wednesday, July 25, the Japanese training squadron, under the command of Vice-Admiral Seizo Kobayashi, consisting of Idzumo (flagship) and Yakmuo,, will arrive in Wellington, remaining here until the following Saturday. The squadron has with it some notable officers.
11.1.1 f. Prince Takamatsu, who is a sub-lieutenant on the Yakumo, is the third son of the late Emperor Taisho (died on December 25, 1926), and younger brother of the present Emperor. He is unmarried, and was born in Tokio on January 3. 1905. He’entered the Naval College, Etajima, on July 24, 1921. appointed midshipman July 24, 1924, and

second sub-lieutenant December 1. 192 a. He entered the Naval Torpedo College December 1, 1926, and the Naval Gunnery College April 13, 1927. He served on several warships, and was made sublieutenant December 1, 1927. . Vice-Admiral Seizo Kobayashi, C. 8., C.V.0., was born on March 1, 187 (. He entered the Naval College, Etajima, I’ ebruary 5, 1896, and became a midshipman December 13, 1898, second sub-lieutenant January 12, 1900, sub-lieutenant October 1, 1901. He visited Australia, and New Zealand on the training ship Kongo in 1902, served in the Russo-Japanese W alas a lieutenant. VICE-ADMIRAL SEIZO KOBAYASHI, Commander of the Japanese Squadron, was a student of the Naval Staff College in Tokio. He was private secretary to the Minister of the Navy, with the rank of lieuti-commander, 1910-11. He was stationed in England, July, 1911-Decem-ber. 1912: in U.S.A. December, 19121813. He served in the Great War at first as commander, aiid accompanied Admiral Baron Dewa, representative of the Japanese Government, to the Panama International Exhibition, in 1915. He was unpointed captain on April 1, 1917, and commanded the H.I.J.M.S. Himado, engaged in the fightings in the Paqiiic, and the patrolling of the Australian and New Zealand waters. lie was Naval Attache to the Japanese Embassy in London, 1920-1922; Rear-Admiral June 1, 1922; Vice Admiral December 1, 1926; attached to the Japanese delegates to the Limitation of Naval Armaments Conference at Geneva as Chief Naval Expert, 1927, and ' appointed Commander of Training Squadron, January 15,' 1928.
