RUGBY FOOTBALL
WELLINGTON UNION MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The Wellington Rugby Union met last night, Mr. J. Prendeville presiding. A letter was received from the Nelson Kugby Union saying that they regretted that they could not entertain the idea of sending junior representatives to play at Wellington this year, as arrangements had been made to send their juniors over to Blenheim and to Golden Bay. The Melrose Club wrote protesting against the action of the Berhamporc Club in including in its fourth grade team against Melrose a player who had not been transferred from the Melrose Club. It was decided to ask the Berhampore Club for an explanation. A letter received from the Manawatu Kugby Football District Council suggesting that a Manawatu third and Wellington fourth game be played at Wellington on August 18 as a curtainraiser' to tbe Auckland-Wellington game was referred to the Junior Advisory Committee for consideration. In a letter received from Mr. K. Dntroeh (secretary of tbe Navy League) it was stated that Mr. W. Armour, headmaster of Wellington College, had written to the league suggesting that a suitable way of entertaining the midshipmen and officers of the Japanese training ships which arrive here on July would be to extend to them an invitation to attend tbe annual match of the College against St. Patricks Co liege, which is to be played on that afternoon. Mr. Darroeh’s request that Mr. Aimotir’s suggestion should be favourably considered was granted. The invitation will include the officers and cadets pt the Argentinian training shin which Will be in port at the same time. It was decided to allow the Hutt Cen-tral-Masterton West primary school match to be played as a curtain-raiser at I. p.m. on the Hutt Recreation Ground on July 21. The secretary of the Selwyn Club wrote (on June 1) as follows: On behalf of our sixth grade team, I have been instructed to enter a protest, and ask that the match played by them last week against Oriental sixth grade be awarded to them on the ground that one of the Oriental players is over the age limit, and is also a member of our club. He played for our club at the beginning of this season, and has not since been transferred either to the Oriental or to any other club.” It was decided that Oriental is to lose the matches in which that particular person played. . Invited by the Fijian Rugby Union to play a series of matches in Fiji, a University team will leave Auckland for Suva by the Tofua on Saturday. August 11. 1 Twenty players will make the trip. Two seasons ago the Fijian Union issued a similar invitation and members of the club who made the trip have still happy memories of their games at Suva and Levuka and hospitality extended by their hosts. Last year the University. Club invited the Fijian Union to send a team to Auckland, but the island officials were unable to get a team away. The team leaving Auckland in August will contain a fair sprinkling of senior players, chiefly forwards, and should be able to give a very good account of itself. The majority of the backs are second-grade players, but they have been playing together all through the season and should be able to show the islanders quite a lot of good back play. The team will be away for about three weeks, being due to arrive back at Auckland on September 3.
