OTAGO UNIVERSITY
A HINT TO THE WEALTHY Dominion Special Service. ■ Dunedin, June 19. In presenting his report on the University finances to the meeting of the University Council yesterday Afternoon, the treasurer (Mr. L. D. Ritchie) said that when they reviewed the figures they could not help being struck ..by the scant amount they had at their disposal. Although their assets bulked very largely under the new system of- bookkeeping he did not think the people of Dunedin and Otago realised what an asset they had in their University. There were 1100 students attending the University. about half ■of whom came from other parts of the Dominion. Moreover, the parents of many of the students would probably not reside in Dunedin were it not that it was a university centre. He was convinced that there were many people contemplating gilts or bequests to useful institutions and ■ were undecided what to do. If they realised the needs of the University and the benefits it. conferred through its graduates on the entire community. . they would help in the desired direction. The need of building up the endowments of their University could not be over emphasised.
