AMERICAN DEBATING TEAM

BRIGHT AND POLISHED SPEAKERS Dominion Special Service. Auckland, June 18. Keen interest was taken in the first debate of the American University team in the Town Hall to-night, the subject being: “That the American policy of prohibition is desirable.” The visitors took the affirmative, and the Auckland University College team the negative. Sir Walter Stringer presided over a crowded attendance. The Americans showed to greater advantage on the platform, and although two of them are very young, they revealed themselves as practised speakers. They preserved throughout a light and humorous touch, which thoroughly entertained the audience, although when required, a good command of serious argument was produced. The Auckland team lacked the brightness and polish of the visitors. By agreement there was no decision.
