CRICKET IN ENGLAND
TEST TRIAL MATCH SLOW PLAY TIRES SPECTATORS (Australian Press Association.) London, June IS. There was a large crowd at Lord’s to witness the Test trial cricket match between England and The Rost. it was a dull day, and the cricket was slow. Sutcliffe aud Hallows were not faking risks They were England's alternative opening pair tn the absence of Hobbs, and made a capable century partnership for the first wicket. Hallows scored at the rate of twenty-five runs per hour. He was twice missed. The batsmen were finally separated by a flue catch by Ames, who ’kept, wickets most brilliantly, suggesting that it. will be a dose race between be and Smith for the wickct-kecpcr-ship in the West Indies Test. Smith also kept tbo wickets perfectly for The Rest. The batsmen were flattered by the bowling which was of a good length and direction, but without brilliancy. Nichols s pace apparently surprised Sutcliffe and Tyldesley. A section of the spectators, tired of the ultra-correct batting as the afternoon wore on. barracked. England scored 247 runs for the. loss of three wickets. Sutcliffe made 101, Hallows 55, and E. Tyldesley 64. The match was interrupted owing to rain.
