ALLEGED BRIBERY
CANADIAN IMMIGRATION PERMITS Ottawa, May 15. Alderman Coldwell, of Regina, before the Immigration Committee, said that Mr. Forke, Minister of Immigration, indicated to him that Mr. E. J. McMurray, former Solicitor-General, received 100 dollars for each immigration permit. The statement caused a sensation, and he was summoned to Ottawa as the result of speeches during an election campaign’charging members of Parliament with having accepted money for permits. These were special privilege permits, and allowed members to recommend the entry of persons not coming within the immigration regulations. The witness said that Forke remarked that if he wished lie could become a millionaire in his Department. Forke told him definitely that McMurray obtained permits in large numbers, and got enough to pay' his election expenses. Witness mentioned another case. He did not know the name, and knew nothing concerning present members.
A DENIAL Winnipeg, May 15. In an interview, Mr. McMurray characterised the Coldwell statement as utterly false. “I have never, received a single penny,” he said, and if the witness and others repeat these statements where there is no protection, I will seek redress in the proper way.
