THE CARILLON
WHEN BELLS WILL PLAY It is expected that the War Jl6morial Carillon bells, a considerable number of which have already been cast, will be assembled for playing at the Croydon foundry in January next, and that if the tests which they are then to undergo prove satisfactory, they will be forthwith shipped to New Zealand. As the erection of the campanile is to be expedited in order to accommodate the bells on arrival, this means that the bells should be playing here by July of next year. The War Jlemorial Carillon Society, however, has ordered heavier bells than was originally intended, and in order to meet this liability is appealing to the general public to provide at least another £lOO9. A strong canvassing committee has been set up, which proposes to get to work right away, and/a “street day” will be held on Friday, June 8, the anniversary of the Battle of Jlessines.
