MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE CASES. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.. presided In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Patrick John McCormack, an engineer, aged 31, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to account to Campbell Motors, Ltd., for sums of money totalling £3 2s. 6d. Chief-Detective Ward stated that accused, who was a married man with. two children, had been receiving a salary of £6 ss. per week. He received the money from clients to pay to his firm, but had failed to account for it. The Magistrate, who told accused he had no need to steal such small sums when he was receiving a good salary, imposed a fine of £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment on each charge. Accused was allowed a fortnight in which to find the money and was ordered to make restitution of the amount stolen. James Ward, a labourer, aged 48, was lined IDs., in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, for his second offence of drunkenness. For unlawfully deserting from the ship Kia Ora at Wellington, Robert Landy. nilas Lundy, was sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour. Accused, it was stated, had twenty-nine prior convictions. A mild plague of rats is at present being experienced in parts of Auckland (states the “New Zealand Herald”). The rats have become particularly trouble-, some in Parnell, and two traps set at one house were successful in catching MJ in four days.
