LABOURERS’ WAGES INCREASED

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL DECISION.

Christchurch, May 15. The City Council decided last night to grant an increase m wages to the general labourers in its employ. The decision was opposed by the non-Labour representatives on the council. Councillor Beaven said that he was against the principle of the council fixing up awards Vithout referring them to the Arbitration Court. The council, over since it had been a Labour council, had been making a privileged class of council employees. The total cost of the increases is £3200 annually.
