Motorists on the road between Gisborne and Rotorua during the next few weeks will no doubt have a tedious time at intervals when they meet several mobs of sheep bound from Poverty Bar to the Waikato, (says the “Herald”). A mob of 4500 breeding ewes left Puha the other. morning, while another 4700 will set out soon. Two further lots of from 3000 to 4000 are expected' to go forward on the. same route some time shortly. With so many sheep on. the move at the one time, motorists on that route are advised to keep a particularly "'sharp look-out.:. .- Had the head of any passenger oil the south-bound express train been protruding through a window as the train drew into the Ashburton station the other morning, it would probably have been severely-struck by "the arm of the tablet machine (says the “Guardian”). for some reason the arm failed to swing clear of the train after the engine had taken up the tablet, the end being within a few inches of the sides of the- cars. Before the express had travelled far, however, a railway official noticed the trouble and promptly swung it clear. Havihaking has practically concluded in the .Thames Valley and 1 hames coast farming areas (says an exchange). The crops in most cases have, been rather light, but the quality is good and no losses have occurred through wet weather, conditions having been most favourable for cropping. A feature of the harvesting season has been the more extensive use of machinery, particularly on farms where large herds demand a plentiful suply of winter fodder,-’ *• ’
