SHIPBUILDING

LAST YEAR’S OUTPUT IN BRITAIN NEARLY DOUBLE THAT OF 1926 Rugby, January 11. Shipbuilding returns compiled by /Lloyd’s Register show that the output of British shipbuilding yards for 1927 was nearly double the trade of the preceding year. The tonnage launched was the largest in any quarter since 1920. The gross tonnage under construction in Great Britain and Ireland last year was over one and a quarter millions' compared with 638,000 in 1926. This- amount exceeded half tlie world’s tonnage output, all the other countries last year together producing 987,000 tons. Figures of the present construction show that the tonnage of the work proceeding in British ship-building yards is 1,579,000, which is more than doube the amount for the corresponding date last year. This figure exceeds the tonnage at present being built in the rest of the world, and includes 200,000. tons intended for British Dominions, and 200,000 tons for foreign owners. —British Official Wiieless.
